Science

Year 7 Physical World students have started the year off with many exciting experiences in science. A highlight has been a visit from the marvellous creatures from Reptile Encounters. Millie Silver and Katarina Attwood from 7M2 have shared their experience below:
Last week on Tuesday the year sevens had the opportunity to meet different animals during a reptile encounter incursion. My class saw an olive python, a frill-necked lizard, a frog, a saltwater crocodile, a red-tailed black cockatoo, a stick insect and a sugar glider. Whilst we were there, we learnt about the Linnaean classification method. My class’s favourite animal was the sugar glider as it was adorable with its big eyes and soft fur. We were lucky enough to be able to touch all the animals which was so cool, and all the animals had such different features. It was an invaluable experience.
Students have also learned to connect with their local area and the long history of Wurundjeri culture that continues to be a part of this land. By walking through the Murnong patch along the Birrarung, students used their senses to see, hear and feel their surroundings and write an Acknowledgement of Country. Jasmine, Nithika and Camilla have shared their words below:
I would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians who took care of our land, caring for our native environment up to this day. I pay my respects to all the elders in the Kulin nation and all the Wurundjeri people. I will continue to care and nurture this land to honour the First Nations people, and keep the trees, rivers, plants, and animals healthy and cared for.
Jasmine, 7C1
Here, on the grounds and soil we are standing on, we wholeheartedly acknowledge the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation. We acknowledge every Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander person, especially those affected by colonisation. We acknowledge the Wurundjeri people as traditional owners of this land and say thank you to them
Nithika, 7L2
I will care for, acknowledge and respect this Country. I know that this Country was the Wurundjeri peoples happy and safe pace, where they cared for others and connected with the Country. I am so grateful to be on this beautiful land.

Year 12 Physics Excursion: Physics at Luna Park
On Thursday 6 February, the Year 12 Physics students had the exciting opportunity to visit Luna Park for a hands on practical investigation of the physics behind amusement park rides. With the park closed to the public and open exclusively to physics students from across Victoria, it was a unique chance to experience theoretical concepts in real world applications.
Throughout the day, students observed and analysed various forces at play, from acceleration and momentum to centripetal force and projectile motion. One of the highlights was riding the iconic Scenic Railway, where they experienced the effects of centripetal force firsthand as the roller coaster curved along the tracks. These practical experiences will be invaluable as they prepare for their upcoming assessment on projectile motion.
Beyond the academic aspects, the excursion was a fantastic bonding experience, filled with laughter, adrenaline, and even some unexpected luck! One group of students was thrilled to find $40 on the ground! Overall, the day was both educational and memorable.
