Harmony Week

Fiesta!

Twenty-one student volunteers helped Horsham College mark Harmony Week with a lunchtime event on Thursday, March 20th.  Attended by hundreds of students, the Harmony Week Fiesta! celebrated our success as a multicultural community, building on our Horsham College value of Character.

All of our Year 12 senior student leaders were on hand to manage sites, with other students from every year level playing a role.  School Captains Hugo Hopper and Edie Mason were busy handing out classic Australian Vegemite sandwiches and delicious European spiced biscuits, while Vice Captain Zane Joseph helped deliver over 240 tropical fruit drinks to thirsty students with the assistance of Calistar and Esther Hamura who wore their traditional clothing from Papua New Guinea.  Vice-Captain, Ella Hion, stayed safe with her team of student volunteers behind the temporary tattoo stand as hundreds of flowers, mermaids, anchors and exotic symbols were transferred onto the hands and faces of students throughout the event.

Battling the rain clouds, Keeley McDermott encouraged others to get involved in the global games of quoits and elastics while Madi Smith supported activities provided by the Horsham Rural City Council’s Youth Officers.

Ella Lloyd had the enviable job of recording guesses for the German stand where jars stuffed with Haribo Goldbears and Werther’s Original caramels were given away to the person with the guess closest to the answer.  Someone may still be feeling sick if they ate all of their winnings at once – there were 262 Goldbears in that jar!  The Spanish stand is where the battle against the raindrops was really fought as Mr. Berger led the making of tissue paper flowers.  The bright multicoloured b addelooms d to the feast for the eyes, ears and tastebuds that the event provided for students on a very wet Thursday afternoon.

Organised by the chaplain and supported by the Wellbeing Team, this event has become a favourite way to mark the approach of term end.
