Foundation

Foundation in the past week, Prep students have been revising and learning the sounds and letter names for s, m, t, a, p, I, f and r. They practice saying the sounds, hearing the sound at the beginning or end of words and sort pictures according to their beginning sound. They practice writing the letters and forming the letters at the correct starting points.

Gr 1

Gr 1 Students in Grade 1 have learnt that “two letters that work together that make one sound” are called diagraphs, such as ‘ff’, ‘ll’, ‘ss’, ‘zz’, ‘ck’ and ‘sh’. They have been reading aninteresting story “The Pencil”. The pencil draws different characters such as a dog, a cat andsome other friends. Until the pencil has no other choice but to draw a rubber. You can onlyguess what happened next! This week they have been reading “Bears Don’t Read”. It is afeel good story of determination and friendship. George is the bear who finds a love of reading with his new friend “Clementine”.

Gr 2

During Spelling, the students have been learning about adding suffixes to verbs, such as adding ‘ing’. They have also learnt what makes a compound word – two word that join together to make another word like hot + dog = hotdog. The children have also been reading the decodable text “The Frog’s Day Out” to recall the main events in sequence. This week the children created a book report about the texts they have read this term.

In Maths, the Preps have been learning about following directions. They have learnt the terms above, below, in front, behind, next to. They had to listen carefully to instructions to place items, such as cars, next to the blue car or in front of the purple car. This week the Preps have had some fun exploring and making patterns. They then used this pattern knowledge to decorate paper Easter Eggs.

Gr 1

In Maths, the students have begun to explore addition. They have learnt to break numbers into 2 or 3 parts, such as 6 + 2 + 4 = 12.

Gr 2

In Maths, the students have been revising telling the time to the quarter hour on an analogue clock.

Gr 3 and 4

During Literacy, the students have been reading the text “Off We Go Around Australia”. It is a hilarious book about going on a family holiday around Australia. The students have learnt to describe nouns as common or proper and concrete or abstract. They have explored new vocabulary such as adventurous, humongous and minuscule. At a sentence level, the students have learnt that a quality sentence has a description phrase or an appositive.

In Mathematics, the children have continued to learn about time. They have identified clockwise and anti-clockwise turns, reading time on digital devices and calculating elapsed time to the hour.

Gr 5 and 6

During Literacy, the students have almost completed War Horse. The story recounts the experiences of Joey, a horse bought by the Army for service in World War in France and the attempts of 15-year-old Albert, his previous owner, to bring him safely home. The students have also been exploring how to write a persuasive piece of writing. They have used PEEL sentence starters to help write paragraphs.

In Mathematics, students have been learning about Area and Perimeter. Parents may have noticed shapes drawn on in the courtyard with chalk. Much fun was had drawing rectangular shapes with the same area.
