STEM and Italian Class

Celebrating the Chinese New Year: Year of the Snake
In celebration of the Chinese New Year and the Year of the Snake, students in the STEM class have been engaging in various creative projects inspired by this special occasion.
Some students have designed beautiful, beaded snakes, while others have crafted colourful paper snakes. A highlight of our activities was creating a giant paper and beaded snake! Students carefully cut out circles of different sizes, stapled them together to form the body, used smaller circles for the tail, and added a hand-drawn face to complete the design.
These hands-on activities have been a fantastic way to learn about and appreciate Chinese New Year traditions while fostering creativity and teamwork.
Italian Languages Program at Carlton North PS
The school is very excited to again be offering an Italian Languages program across the school in 2025.
We’ve split the duties between two teachers, Dean Banova (teaching Grades Prep, 3/4 and 5/6) and Olivia Devitre (Grade 1/2).
Many of you will know Olivia for her great work in the Art room. Dean is a new (but old!) member of staff. Dean was a teacher here beginning back in 1987 and is making a long-anticipated return!!
Students are being provided with a coordinated program between the two teachers taken in their classrooms for one hour a week. This will focus on building on the students’ personal Italian vocabulary, with an emphasis on correct pronunciation, as well as studying features of Italian culture.
To further support Italian learning all students have been enrolled in the online Learning Platform, Languagenut which is beginning to be introduced to classes in Italian lessons. Each student has an account which they will be able to access at school and at home which will support them in learning their Italian vocabulary and grammar. Periodically, students will be allowed, during their weekly Italian sessions, to log into their accounts to practice words and phrases learnt with their Italian teacher. They will then be encouraged to log in at home to further their study of the course work available. While students will not be set specific homework tasks, it is the hope that they make the choice to log in at home to extend their learning.
So far the Grade 5/6 classes have been practising their numbers 1 to 20 in the program with the Grade 3/4's beginning from next week. Grade Prep and 1/2 will begin on the program later in the year.
We encourage families to check the school newsletter for updates on the word groups we are focussing on. For the next 2 weeks these are: Grade Prep - The numbers 1-10; Grade 1/2 – Food and Colours; Grade 3/4 – the numbers 1-20; Grade 5/6 - The Numbers 1 to 40.
Please feel free to contact our Italian teachers at school if you have any questions.
Here are some pictures of 1/2 students in Italian this week. We learned about different types of italian cuisine and then designed our own menus with starters (antipasti), main courses (primi piatti) and desserts (dolci).
