Year 10 Media: Ashley Gilbertson interview
On Tuesday 4 March, Year 10 and 11 Media students had the privilege of participating in a live interview with esteemed Australian photographer and writer Ashley Gilbertson.
Ashley shared valuable insights into his career, motivations and the evolving landscape of news media. He discussed his work with prominent publications such as The Washington Post and The New York Times, offering firsthand accounts of historical moments he has documented. His work has captured critical global events, including the war in Iraq, the experiences of army veterans post-combat, the COVID-19 pandemic, the global refugee crisis, and the 2021 US Capitol Riots.
A highly acclaimed photojournalist, Ashley has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Robert Capa Gold Medal in 2004 for his coverage of the battle in Fallujah during the Iraq War. Most recently, he was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize as part of The New York Times Breaking News Photojournalism team for their coverage of the Capitol Riots.
Throughout the discussion, Ashley emphasised his role not just as a documentarian but also as an advocate and historian capturing moments of profound injustice and acts of human kindness.
Ashley's work has been exhibited in galleries worldwide, including the National Gallery of Victoria, and is held in major collections such as the Smithsonian National Museum of American History, the National Gallery of Victoria, and the Centre Georges Pompidou.
This extraordinary opportunity provided students with a deeper understanding of visual storytelling, the power of documentary photography, and the ethical responsibilities of media practitioners.

Visiting Japanese cyclists
This week, Girton Grammar was fortunate to host two elite Japanese cyclists, Kajino Teppei and Okano Hitoshi from Mie prefecture in Japan. They are visiting Australia to train and race with local cyclists in Bendigo and Castlemaine.
Girton was approached to host the cyclists because it is the only school in the Bendigo region that offers Japanese, and it was important to the students and their teachers to be hosted at a school that would be able to offer language support if required.
During their time at Girton, the students have enjoyed attending Senior School classes with buddies in various year levels and even joining Co-Connect sessions. The students were very impressed with the new Angus Mackay Pavilion and the Japanese classroom they saw when they visited the Junior School.]
The visit has given Girton's Japanese students a rare opportunity to apply the words they have learnt in class in a real-world situation. Both Girton students and the visiting cyclists have been observed communicating with one another using gestures, broken English and Japanese, and plenty of laughter.
Thank you to all the students who acted as buddies for the cyclists during their time at Girton.
