Spotlight on Learning

Stage 1

Hooray for Week 10! As we wrap up Term 1, 1MP has had a fantastic start to the year. Students have been busy establishing routines, forming some wonderful friendships and setting new learning goals. Here’s a look at what we have been focusing on in the past week.

Mathematics

In Maths, we have looked at place value and the important skill of reading and writing numbers efficiently, recognising that numbers are everywhere in our daily lives. The students used hands on materials such as base 10 blocks to represent numbers up to 1000. We loved playing lots of games to practise our skills, including our whole class trading game where we would roll the dice, collect the base 10 amounts and add them to our total.

English

As part of our InitiaLit program last week, students revised some key concepts they have been learning about over the term. Our activities included a compound word memory game and using block tiles to practise spelling some tricky words.

In writing, the students were learning about the structure and language features of informative texts. Our focus text was Eric Carle’s Book of Amazing Animals, and the students loved learning about a variety of animals across the world. 1MP has written some outstanding informative texts about different species. They should all be so proud of their achievements in this area.

Visual Arts

1MP have studied a number of famous artists and their art styles this term. We have experimented with oil pastels, watercolour and marker to create our own versions of works originally by Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Andy Warhol. We look forward to completing our Salvador Dali inspired elephants this week!

Stage 2

3/4 J in the Spotlight!

This week, our energetic 3/4J class took on the exciting role of news reporters! They have been learning how to write interesting and informative reports about what they've studied over the last few weeks. Their hard work and creativity are evident in their writing, as they share their discoveries. Sit back and enjoy the amazing work of these budding journalists!

Stage 3

Exploring States of Matter: A Hands-On Learning Experience

This term, our Stage 3 students have been diving into the fascinating world of states of matter, learning how materials can be changed and manipulated. Through fun and engaging activities, they've been exploring important questions like: How can we change the state of different materials? Why is it essential to consider the properties of materials when designing and producing items?

One of the highlights of this unit was an exciting experiment focused on bike and helmet safety. Students tested how different materials react to impact by dropping a rockmelon from a height, both with and without the protection of a helmet. This hands-on activity helped them discover how the properties of materials—like hardness, flexibility, and shock absorption—are crucial when it comes to safety equipment. They observed how the cushioning effect of the helmet can significantly reduce damage, showing the importance of selecting the right materials for protective gear.

This unit not only deepened our students' understanding of scientific concepts but also encouraged them to think critically about how these principles apply to everyday life. By experimenting with different materials and observing their properties, they've gained valuable insights into how material selection plays a vital role in engineering and design.
