LOTE (Chinese)
Prep to Year 6 worked productively throughout Term 1 and completed various cultural activities to celebrate the Chinese New Year (CNY)/Spring Festival. They also developed a broader and deeper understanding of the significance of the Chinese Spring Festival and how it is celebrated in the local community worldwide.
Prep to Year 2: DIY Snake Lantern 🏮 学前班到二年级:自制蛇年灯笼
Our Prep to Year 2 learners had the opportunity to explore the Chinese Lantern Festival (元宵节), held on 12th February this year. This marked the last day of the celebration of the Chinese New Year. They were amazed when they watched the cultural video about the Chinese lanterns show exhibited in North Carolina. Now, Prep to Year 2 students also developed a better understanding of the traditions of this festival. They could explain why Asian people make lanterns and eat Tangyuan 汤圆/Yuan Xiao 元宵 to celebrate it. Moreover, they showcased their creativity when making their snake lanterns.
Year 3 & 4: Chinese Paper-Cutting of '3D Spring' 三四年级中国剪纸-'3D春字'
Year 3 and 4 students explored different types of Chinese folk art this term. One of the highlights was the Chinese paper-cutting of 3D Spring (3D 春字). People in China always like to use traditional paper-cutting to decorate their houses for the Chinese Spring Festival, and some of the patterns are fascinating. It was impressive to see how our learners enjoyed the Chinese paper-cutting activity and were resilient throughout the process.
Year 5&6: CNY Snake Poster and Chinese Calligraphy 五六年级春节蛇年海报和中国书法
As creative thinkers, Year 5 and 6 learners had the opportunity to create a phenomenal CNY snake poster to demonstrate their understanding of the Year of the Snake with some focused vocabulary (e.g., Spring Festival 春节, Snake 蛇, and Blessing 福) written in a bilingual version. Later in the term, they also experienced Chinese calligraphy for the first time and designed the Chinese character '福 'in an artistic style.
Harmony Day Celebration and DIY Harmony Week Wristband 多元文化节和自制手链
On 21st March, Prep to Year 6 students at DPS celebratedHarmony Day to increase their awareness of the diverse culture in Australia and be inclusive of each other's similarities and differences.
During LOTE sessions, we read an eBook called 'We Are All Different' and had a rich class discussion regarding our differences in hairstyles, home languages, siblings, and etc. As critical thinkers, students reflected on their cultural identity and shared ideas on embracing each other's differences while maintaining friendships in our school community. They showed great interest when making their Harmony Week wristbands.
I am so proud of our P-6 students at our school. Their enthusiasm and work effort impressed me when we inquired the unit of inquiry about the Chinese New Year/Spring Festival. Well done, everyone! Thank you for being so dedicated, and I look forward to delving more into the Chinese language and culture learning with you in Term 2!
