Cultural Studies - Ms Foster

It has been a busy term in Cultural Studies and the Library! We have celebrated Ramadan, Holi, Nowruz, Eid and discussed Easter. It's a busy time for cultural celebrations!
PREP: Prep investigated 'Culture and Me'. We looked at how we are the same, and how we might be different. We read the book 'I am Australian' and discussed how we are all Australian even though we may have other cultures in our background as well. Each child created a 'Mini Me' proudly displaying the flag of Australia and any other flags in their cultural background. Thank you to the parents for your assistance in letting me know the cultural backgrounds of your children.
GRADE ONE AND TWO: Grade One and Two looked at Asian Culture. In the second half of the term, we learnt about the culture of India and Iran. We focused on two of the celebrations from these countries which were happening in Term 1 - Holi and Nowruz.
GRADE THREE: Grade Three completed their projects about an Asian Country. They chose which country they would like to research and over the term investigated the Food, Language, Leisure Activities and a topic of their choice. I am so impressed with the final projects!
GRADE FOUR: Grade Four enjoyed learning about "African Cultures". In the second half of the term we investigated South Africa and Kenya. Overall, students were amazed by the diversity in cultures between different countries in Africa, and many have now been added to the 'Travel bucketlist'! They also enjoyed showing off their knowledge through a Plickers quiz at the end of the term.
GRADE FIVE: Grade Five have learnt about "Religions of the World" over this term. In the second half of the term they discovered some of the beliefs, celebrations and traditional stories in the Hindu and Buddhist faith. I have been incredibly impressed with the maturity and respect shown by all students when learning about beliefs that may be different to their own. A Plickers quiz at the end of term was a great way to test what they had learnt!
GRADE SIX: Grade Six has been looking at how their culture has effected who they are. They investigated the concept of Visible and Hidden Culture and created an Iceburg about themselves. This showed the parts of their culture they show on the outside, as well as the hidden parts which are harder to see. This was a very complex task and I was very impressed with the final product!
I look forward to learning about 'Indigeous Australian Culture' with all levels next term.
