Level Five

This term in Year 5, we have been exploring the lives of children around the world and how their experiences differ from life in Australia. As part of this unit, we have taken a virtual journey across the globe, focusing on some of the world’s poorest countries and the ways in which other nations provide aid to children in need.

A highlight of this unit was our Poetry Slam Day, where students presented poems reflecting on how limited access to essential resources impacts children. They focused on four major issues: malnutrition, sanitation, poverty, and illiteracy.

Building on their learning, students then worked in small groups to create PowerPoint presentations about various Aid Agencies, demonstrating their understanding of how these organisations support children both in Australia and overseas. Through this task, they developed their ICT and presentation skills, delivering engaging and informative presentations to their peers.

This unit has provided a meaningful opportunity for students to reflect on the privileges we enjoy in Australia and to consider ways they can contribute to helping children in need worldwide. It has encouraged them to think globally about the impact of these critical issues and to deepen their understanding of children’s rights, the role of the United Nations, and what life might be like for children growing up in different circumstances.

Eva 5P: I learnt that some places in the world do not have proper electricity, housing or healthcare for the community.

Laith 5P: Illiteracy is interesting because people in certain countries cannot write, read or speak because in Australia this is not that common but in other countries it can be very common.

Ariyan 5H: I was very nervous to write a poem but by the presentation I wrote a whole poem which was a page long! I learnt that poverty really affects a lot of people around the world.

Lucas 5H: My favourite part of the unit was finding information about the big issues and presenting it as a group in the class. I had malnutrition and I learnt that there are a lot of people who do not have access to food or clean water.

Gieselle 5K: I learnt that a lot of people live in poverty. We need to think about not only our lives but also the other people who live in poverty around the world.

Chloe 5K: My favourite part has been researching the aid agency Oxfam for my group project. It has been fun working as a team with my classmates and presenting to the class.
