Last Thursday, the Preps walked to the Frankston Library. Miss Millie took us on a tour, showing the students where to find different genres of books, the automated book sorter, and the returns chutes. She also explained the various activities that take place regularly at the library after school and on weekends. Miss Millie then read a story to the Preps before we walked back to school. The students enjoyed engaging with important people and places in our local community. The library welcomes everyone to become a member, and library members can borrow up to 40 books at a time!
The Preps are playing a math game called Subitising Tower Bingo. In the game, students roll a die, find the matching numeral, and build a matching tower. The first player to fill their board shouts, "Bingo!"
In math, the students are learning to write numerals from 0 to 5 and match them with corresponding collections. Working in five small groups, the students used a variety of concrete materials and objects to create collections that matched their chosen numeral. Afterwards, they went on a gallery walk to observe and discuss the different numerals and collections. It was an opportunity for them to debate whether the collections matched the numerals.
The students are learning the sounds /m/ and /s/ along with the corresponding letter names. They identify words that begin with these sounds and practice segmenting and blending sounds to form words. The Preps continue to clap the syllables in words, identify rhyming words, and provide examples of rhymes. They have also started literacy rotations to reinforce the phonemic awareness skills being taught. Some of the activities include rhyming word sorting, syllable clapping, and accurately writing their names with the correct punctuation.
The Preps are learning about and practising good manners in different situations. We discussed that using good manners shows respect and courtesy towards others. In small groups, the students used sock puppets to act out scenarios. They were given sentences, and the puppets provided examples of when to use good manners. For example, "I should say please when..." and "I should say thank you when..."
