Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon

It is a busy time in the sport space at the moment. As well as concluding our large term 1 program we had the AIC swimming championships last week, trials are commencing for rugby and football, and many representative trials are occurring as well. Boys are reminded that in-season sport takes priority and once committed to playing, the school takes priority over other pursuits.

Last weekend saw the 1st XI cricket secure the Premiership with a round to go, after defeating Villanova on their wicket we cannot be caught now and this weekend we are playing for an undefeated against Padua. This is back-to-back premierships for this group. Congratulations to the players and coaching staff of Mr Michael Abbott, Mr Tom Gibson and Mr Gareth Kolkenbeck-Ruh, as well as cricket coordinator, Mr Matt Millward. As it stands, we are also in first place in the cricket aggregate shield going into round 7, where every match is important.

Our volleyball program had some pleasing results on Saturday against Villanova. Unfortunately, the 1st VI went down in a tight five-set match at Villa. The AFL teams had a tough day on Saturday, and the 1st XVIII were outplayed in the wet by Villa on Friday afternoon.

This weekend we take on Padua in the local derby. A reminder to all players that sanctions from one season carry forward to the next term. It would be a shame for boys to miss round 1 next term because of something silly this weekend.

AIC Swimming Championships

What an incredible event last Tuesday at Chandler. Marist again went head-to-head with probably the best swimming program in Australia. It was a tight tussle, with only 26 points separating us as we headed into the final relays. In the end Marist (636.5) finished 20.25 points behind St Peters (656.75) with Villanova in third (429.5). Overall we won the Year 5, 13 Years and 16 Years trophies and came away after our best result in a number of years and gained confidence that if we do the hard work, we can keep climbing the mountain and secure the championship in 2027. The team was very well led by Captains Archer Mellifont and Max Russo.

Thank you to Mr James Boyce, Director of Swimming, and the extended coaching and support staff of Mrs Cath Geraghty, Mrs Catherine Barnett, Ms Jade Ritchie, Mr Joel Stopforth, Mr James Leigh, Mr Bailey Skinner, Mr Glen Housman, Mr Noah Magoffin, Mr Damien Bromley and Mr David Meehan.

Building Community Through Saturday Sport – The Social Fabric of AIC Fixtures

At Marist College Ashgrove, Saturday sport is about far more than the result on the scoreboard. Each weekend, AIC fixtures provide an opportunity for our community to come together in a shared experience that reflects the spirit and values of the College. From early morning departures to the final whistle of the afternoon games, Saturday sport plays a powerful role in building connection, belonging and pride.

For many boys, these fixtures become some of the most memorable moments of their school journey. Pulling on the Marist jersey represents more than participation in a game; it signifies being part of something bigger than oneself. When teams travel to compete against other AIC schools, they carry with them the identity of the College and the support of their peers, families and staff.

What makes Saturday sport particularly special is the community that surrounds it. Parents gathering on the sideline, younger boys watching older teams play, coaches investing time in developing players, and teachers supporting outside the classroom all contribute to a strong sense of shared purpose. These moments strengthen the relationships that sit at the heart of the Marist experience.

Sport also provides a unique space where boys connect across year levels. Younger students look up to senior players, learning what commitment and teamwork look like in action. Senior students, in turn, recognise their role as leaders and role models within the program. This natural mentoring helps shape a culture where respect, encouragement and school pride are visible each weekend.

The rhythm of the AIC season also creates a consistent point of connection for families. Saturday mornings become part of the weekly routine, where friendships are formed not just among students but among parents and supporters who stand together on the sidelines. In a busy world, these shared experiences matter. They provide time and space for relationships to grow.

Importantly, the lessons boys learn through Saturday sport extend well beyond the field. They learn how to prepare, how to compete with integrity, how to handle both success and disappointment, and how to represent their school with humility and pride.

At its best, Saturday sport weaves together the many parts of the Marist community. It connects boys, staff and families in a common purpose and reinforces the values that underpin the College. In doing so, AIC fixtures help build the social fabric that makes Marist College Ashgrove such a strong and connected community.

Term 2 Sport Uniforms

Uniforms for our Term 2 sports are available from the unform shop now. As these sports are all unlimited player numbers, items can be purchased now in preparation for the season ahead.

It has been great to see that the message of we train in the Marist training shirt has been well received this year. It really has been wonderful to see the blue and gold across our fields in term 1 and it has so far continued well with football, cross country and rugby. There are a number of reasons why we want this. Firstly it builds a sense of belonging and unity and we are all together as one. Secondary to this it also equalizes everyone (which is important when trialling teams) and thirdly, it makes life a lot easier operationally for coaches in organising opposed training activities. Well done gents, keep it up.

On Saturdays when we play fixtures it is important that we present the college in a positive light as we are representatives of the college wherever we go. Boys are to turn up to matches either in playing kit or school uniform, getting changed to play. All boys must have covered shoes (no slides, thongs or Birkenstocks) and if it is a bit cooler the outer wear must be Marist apparel, either tracksuit jacket, school hoodie or school jumper. No random jumpers or jackets should be seen.

All spectators, including those boys who have played already need to be in full college uniform. This will include getting changed into school uniform at the completing of your match if you intend to stay and support others. If you are involved in games before the firsts and you are staying to watch, unless you are involved on the bench with the team you must get changed. No longer can boys use the excuse of I played the game before, it only takes five minutes to get changed. Boarders will need to take their change of clothes with you, similar to a day boy would need to do, in case the dorm is closed when you need to get changed.

Representing Marist

It is a wonderful thing to be able to play sport with your mates and represent the college. It builds character and resilience, develops skills and fitness, and should be a fun and enjoyable experience. This is a reminder to all boys, some of whom are playing sport for the first time this year of our expectations and standards around behaviour to make sure we are allowing everyone to enjoy the opportunity of AIC sport. We represent our College with pride, with respect for the officials, our opponents and the game.

What does that look like? We accept the referees decision, regardless of what we think of it. We respect our opponent at all times, we do not sledge, swear or get into arguments, we keep our hands to ourselves and we do not retaliate regardless of the provocation.

AIC Code of Behaviour - Players

Fundamental to the AIC, is our belief in inclusion and fellowship. This means that as a player you are welcoming to everyone and treat them with the greatest levels of respect, protecting the rights, dignity and worth of every person regardless of their gender, ability/disability, sexual orientation, cultural background, or religion.

As a player who will be representing their college and playing under the auspices of AIC, you play an important role in upholding the values of the AIC and the College. Players need to demonstrate the following behaviours regarding their conduct:

  • Exhibit a high standard of conduct and sportsmanship on and off the field including appropriate language, social media posts, and interaction with officials and opposition players.
  • Respect your opponents by displaying humility in victory and graciousness in defeat.
  • Play in the correct age group and commit to and respect the team that you are selected in.
  • Play hard and competitively, but always fairly and accept the official's decisions.
  • Cooperate with your coach, teammates, opponents, officials, and spectators.
  • Do not sledge, abuse, or threaten opponents or officials.
  • Be punctual to games and have the correct equipment and College attire.
  •  Acknowledge the opposition before and after the game with a handshake and thanks.
  • Adhere to host school requirements when playing at their venues.
  • Take pride in representing your College and the AIC.
  • Do not act in a way that may adversely affect or reflect on, or bring you, your team, College or the AIC, into disrepute or discredit.
  • Do not use drugs, including pain killers, to improve or maintain performance.

Undefeated Teams

We have a number of undefeated teams going into round 7, though not all listed have played a full complement of matches. To be eligible for an undefeated team pennant, teams must:

An undefeated team is defined using the following criteria:

  • A team in a full AIC competition that has played a full seven (7) rounds of AIC competition and remained undefeated throughout; or
  • A team that has played a full seven (7) matches against other AIC, GPS or other schools in a supplementary competition. If the team plays against other schools from outside the AIC and that team is deemed to be at a higher level, or an AIC team from a higher division or age/year, that team can lose up to one (1) match against said “higher ranked team” and still claim undefeated status and be eligible for an undefeated pennant.

These are our undefeated teams, though not all are eligible for pennants, we still celebrate their achievements:

  • Cricket: 1st XI; 3rd XI Blue; 3rd XI Gold; 9C; 8B Blue; 8C Gold; 7B; 7C Blue; 7C Gold; 6B; 6C Blue; 5B Gold; 5C Blue; 5C Gold; 5D Blue; 5D Gold; 5D White.
  • Volleyball: 9C

Swimming

Mr James Boyce - Director of Swimming

Firstly, I would like to congratulate this year’s AIC Swimming Team. While we were disappointed to once again finish just behind St Peter’s Lutheran College, there is no doubt that our boys should feel incredibly proud of the effort, commitment, and spirit they showed throughout the entire day. It was a performance that truly reflected what it means to represent Marist.

On the morning of the carnival, the team came together to reflect on the three values that define Marist Swimming this year: Courage, Excellence, and Unity. These values were chosen by the swimmers and coaching staff as the qualities that best represent what a Marist swimmer stands for.

We also spoke about the College’s mascot, the bumblebee, and why it symbolises our community so well. According to the laws of aerodynamics, the bumblebee should not be able to fly—its body weight is not in the right proportion to its wingspan. Yet the bumblebee flies anyway.

On Tuesday, our team did exactly that.

On paper there were races where Marist may not have been expected to win, yet time and again our boys stood up and delivered. They showed courage in the face of pressure, pursued excellence in every race, and demonstrated unity in the way they supported one another. Together, they rose to the moment and flew down that pool.

There were countless performances across the day that made the Marist community proud. A few that particularly stood out included:

  • Nathan Cullen, who delivered a remarkable performance, winning six races from six starts.
  • Bas Martinuzzi, who produced an incredible finish in a race where it looked as though he had been beaten, showing tremendous determination.
  • Will Hutchinson, for his outstanding swim in the 50m Breaststroke and his powerful effort on the anchor leg of the relay.
  • Morgan Elphinstone, who not only won the 50m Freestyle, but did so in a National Qualifying Time.

Each year we present the Heather Spencer Award for a performance that truly captures the spirit of our team—one that embodies courage, determination, and the willingness to rise above expectations.

This year the award was shared by Archer Mellifont and Thomas Bedggood. On paper they were not expected to win their races, and the pressure leading into the carnival would have been immense. Yet when the moment arrived, both boys delivered when their team needed them most. Their performances perfectly captured the spirit of Marist Swimming.

This year’s team was led by Archer Mellifont and Max Russo. At the beginning of Term 4, we sat down with the Year 12 swimmers to discuss how they wanted to leave the program in a better place than when they inherited it. I truly believe they have achieved exactly that. Archer, Max, and the entire Year 12 cohort have provided outstanding leadership, and the program is stronger because of their efforts. I am incredibly proud of the legacy they leave behind.

Grade of the Round

Congratulaions to the Year 7s who are this week’s grade of the round. The opens are made up of our 7As and 7Bs. The 7As put on a good performance against Villanova 7As, while they didn’t come away with the win, they held Villa to a much better score than the first time they played them. The 7Bs had an awesome comeback win against the Villa 7Bs, a great show of resilience and teamwork. Thanks to coaches Mark Wojcik, Ollie Beattie, Zac McLean and Samantha Davids for their commitment to developing these players. Well done to players Charlie Taylor and Miles Peric who picked up the respective BOGs in the Year 7s.

Volleyball

Mr Blair Whitlock – Volleyball Coordinator

Rugby Union

Mr Richard Graham – Director of Rugby / Track and Field

Rugby Ready Program | Year 5-12

This is the FINAL week of the 4-week Rugby Ready Program. Please continue to read the Parent Orbit and emails for all the necessary details including the program content, schedule and dress code.

Thanks to both the students for attempting to stay on the scheduled timeline throughout the term, and parents / guardians who have continued to read the information. This has helped us remain on schedule and should allow all students wishing to play rugby to complete the 4 sessions and be prepared for trials.

A reminder for those students wishing to play rugby union at the College that the Rugby Ready Program is a mandatory program. I understand some students have missed sessions due to injury or illness, however I will work with all the students to make sure you complete the program.

Please NOTE, if a student does miss a session, please attend another session this week to complete your 4 sessions. We have a range of year levels attending sessions and the students will rotate in their respective year levels.

NOTE that next Monday 23rd at 6:45am, there will be an ALL AGES session to assist students who have missed a session or are catching up due to swimming, etc.

Thanks to the coaches for volunteering their time and expertise to the program. Marist is fortunate to have many staff, old boys and current students contributing to the rugby program. We appreciate all that they do in creating a safe and challenging rugby environment.

Thanks to all College departments for supporting the Rugby Ready Program.

Rugby Union Trials

Rugby trials are almost upon us! Following the conclusion of the Rugby Ready Program at the end of Week 8, the boys will start to prepare in their Year levels for the full school internal trial on Saturday 28 March (end of Week 9). This day also serves as the Rosalie Tribute Round.

Please make sure you see the Rugby Union Key Dates Calendar in the Parent Orbit for all games throughout the season.

Marist Rugby Union | Sign On

Thank you to the 600+ students who have already signed on to play rugby at the College in 2026.

Parents - please find the Extra-Curricular tile on Parent Orbit to find information regarding sign on. You are able to sign your son up for a chosen sport once the portal opens.

Students who wish to play Term 2 sports, you are able to sign up via the student café. Once your son/s have signed up all parents or caregivers MUST approve the signup and edit or update any medical details.

This assists the College in organising the appropriate number of coaching staff and to deliver the necessary resources, and ensures all relevant information is forwarded to you via communication channels.

Blue Squad | Trial Match

Thanks to the Everton Park Roosters Rugby Union Club for hosting the Blue Squad’s trial on Sunday. The College has a long history with the club and we appreciate them allowing us to use their facilities for the trial game.

Unfortunately, a combination of niggling injuries and a small number of influenza cases reduced the squad from 49 down to 42 students, however it didn’t diminish the quality of the fixture. In humid conditions, it was great to finally see the group get the opportunity to play a game.

As expected in the first competitive hit out, the game was physical and the pressure a level above the previous semi-opposed training sessions. The effort of the students and some of the interplay was outstanding. There were a number of notable performances and it was wonderful to see so many of the squad putting their hand up early in the season to compete for a position in the 1st XV and 2nd XV.

Thanks to the staff who volunteered their time and supported the students during the trial day - Mr Chris Daykin, Mr Drew Smith, Ms Isabel Gilmore and Ms Liani Anderson; our student referees, Jimmy Travers and Will Hutchinson who ran touch line; and our Year 8 student Max Gibson who was there as ball boy. All helped make it a great day at the Everton Park Roosters club.

** Any junior rugby union player looking for a club to continue their rugby pathway, please contact the Everton Park Roosters Rugby Union club situated at Hurdcotte Street, Everton Park. A friendly family club that focuses on strong ethical and family values, without sacrificing competitive football.

Rugby Referee Program | Invitation

This week marks the final week of the Rugby Referee Program, with participants moving into on-field activities that simulate game play and the decisions referees must make during matches.

Thank you to the 18 students from Marist College Ashgrove, two students from Mount St Michael's College, one student from Padua College and one parent who are moving through the course.

We also thank Daniel Mangin from Queensland Rugby Union for delivering the course and supporting the program throughout the AIC rugby season.

Marist Rugby Union | Correct Uniform

As parents begin to purchase clothing in preparation for each term’s sporting commitments, I would like to clarify the College’s expectations regarding the rugby union uniform.

Last season, we had a small number of students cut the bottom off their rugby union socks and insert a white sock. The rugby union uniform is very clear and consists of the bumblebee jersey, Marist sports shorts, and Marist rugby union socks.

There are to be no alterations made to any part of the rugby union uniform. I ask that students and parents please address this prior to the season commencing, rather than it needing to be followed up by coaches closer to the season.

Thank you for your continued support.

Marist Track and Field | Camp (SAVE THE DATE)

Following our success at the 2025 AIC Primary and Secondary Championship and win at the National Schools Challenge (Intermediate Division), the Track and Field program continues to provide excellent opportunities for students to be involved in a high-quality program.

The Track and Field Camp is a vital component of the team’s preparation for the AIC Championship. Over 2½ days, students will receive high-level coaching and mentoring from an exceptional team of specialists including National and Olympic-level coaches across various track and field disciplines.

Attendance at the camp is by invitation only and invitations will be sent to selected students in late August. Selection is based on a range of factors, including performance, attitude, attendance and team composition.

This camp provides an outstanding opportunity for students to refine their skills, build team camaraderie, and gain valuable insights from elite-level coaches as we prepare to defend both our AIC Secondary and AIC Primary Championship trophies.

Camp Information

Dates: Thursday 17 – Saturday 19 September 2026
