Grade 3

Reading and Writing

In literacy, students have been developing their reading comprehension skills by learning to understand texts through their knowledge of text structures, language features and vocabulary. They have been locating key vocabulary words within our class texts, explaining their meanings and using them in their own sentences. Students are also practising how to monitor their understanding while reading by using clues from the text to visualise what is happening and explain their thinking.

In writing, students have been focusing on sentence-level writing by revising the four sentence types: statements, questions, commands and exclamations. They have explored how punctuation changes depending on the sentence type and practised converting one sentence type into another. Students have also been incorporating new vocabulary from our class text into their own sentences to strengthen both their writing skills and their understanding of language.

Maths

In numeracy, students have been strengthening their understanding of addition and subtraction strategies. They have been subtracting two- and three-digit numbers using an empty number line, using place value partitioning to solve addition and subtraction problems, and applying the inverse relationship between addition and subtraction to find unknown values in equations. Students have also been learning about formal units of time, including recognising and applying them, estimating the duration of events and reading and setting time on digital devices.

Naplan

Students have also been preparing for NAPLAN by becoming familiar with the types of questions and tasks they may encounter. Preparation has focused on building confidence and reinforcing key literacy and numeracy skills rather than “teaching to the test.” Students have practised reading and responding to different question formats, applying their comprehension strategies, and solving mathematical problems using the strategies they have been learning in class. This preparation helps students feel comfortable with the assessment format and gives them the opportunity to demonstrate the skills they have been developing throughout the term.
