Supporting every student: Why sharing information matters

As School Psychologists, our role is to support every student's wellbeing and learning. One of the most effective ways to do this is by partnering with families to understand each child’s unique needs. If your child has a medical, learning, neurodevelopmental or mental health diagnosis, sharing this information with the school helps ensure they receive the support they need to thrive.

Why sharing information helps your child

When we are aware of a student’s diagnosis or support needs, we can:

  • Identify reasonable adjustments for equitable access to learning;
  • Create Individual Education Plans (IEPs) or Reasonable Adjustments Plans (RAPs) tailored to your child’s strengths and challenges;
  • Co-ordinate support across teachers, wellbeing teams, and external professionals;
  • Monitor progress and adjust strategies as needed

These supports are not just helpful, but are part of our legal and ethical responsibility to provide inclusive education.

Legal framework: You child’s rights in education

Under the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 (DDA) and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, Australian schools must ensure students with disability can access and participate in education on the same basis as their peers. This includes: (Disability Standards for Education 2005 - Department of Education, Australian Government)

  • Making reasonable adjustments to teaching, assessment, and learning environment
  • Consulting with parents and carers about adjustments that are needed
  • Providing a safe and inclusive environment free from discrimination, harassment or victimisation (Disability Standards for Education)

Confidentiality and privacy

We understand that sharing personal information about your child can feel sensitive. Please be assured that:

  • All information is treated with strict confidentiality;
  • We comply with the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998 (NSW) and the Health Records and Information Privacy Act 2022 (NSW) (Privacy standards);
  • Information is only shared with relevant staff on a need-to-know basis, and always with the aim of supporting learning and wellbeing;
  • School Psychologists follow professional ethical codes that safeguard confidentiality (Psychology Board of Australia - Code of conduct)

How you can help

If your child has a diagnosis or support need, we encourage you to:

  • Contact the School Psychologist (Bec Campey and Emily Reed) or Heads of Learning Enhancement (Harriet Symons or Brooke Church);
  • Share relevant documentation (e.g. reports from health professionals);
  • Participate in planning meetings to help shape your child’s learning and support plans

Together, we can ensure your child’s school experience is positive, inclusive, and empowering.
