The beginning of the school year is always one of the most important moments in boarding, as new students arrive, friendships begin to form, and our community reconnects after the summer break. Across Kinross Wolaroi Boarding, the focus of these first weeks has been simple but deeply meaningful, ensuring every student feels a strong sense of belonging.

We have been especially proud to welcome our new Year 7 boarders, many of whom are experiencing boarding life for the first time. Starting at a new school, and often living away from home, is a significant transition, and our staff and senior students have worked intentionally to create an environment where every boarder feels known, supported, and included from day one.

Our first weekend together set the tone for the term, with a range of cross-site activities designed to bring students together across year groups, boarding houses and sites. Pool parties and relaxed BBQ gatherings provided opportunities for laughter, conversation, and connection, while Year 7 games nights helped our youngest boarders settle in and build friendships in a fun and supportive environment. An ongoing highlight for our new Year 7 Boarders was supper at the Principal’s house,  a new tradition that will allow our girls and boys to gather in a welcoming setting and further strengthen their connection to the wider school community.

Within each boarding house, family groups are now underway. These small groups intentionally bring together students from different year levels, creating natural support networks where younger students are guided by older peers. Already, these groups are fostering leadership, friendship, and a shared sense of responsibility for one another.

The past few weeks have also seen wonderful energy and house spirit on display during the PLC Interhouse Challenges. Boarders competed enthusiastically in a tennis round robin, swimming events, running races, and the ever-popular sack races. The afternoon was filled with encouragement, teamwork, and plenty of laughter, reminding us that participation and community spirit are just as important as competition.

These early experiences play a vital role in shaping the year ahead. Boarding is more than a place, it is a community where students learn independence, resilience, and friendship while feeling a genuine sense of home away from home.

As the term continues, we look forward to building on this strong start and continuing to nurture a boarding environment where every student feels they belong.
