Curriculum & Data

"Curriculum should help children make deeper and fuller understanding of their own experience."

—  Lilian Katz

It has been an incredibly productive few weeks at the College as we move into a critical period of the academic year. As Director of Curriculum and Data, I want to share some insights into the assessments currently taking place and why they form a vital part of your child’s educational journey.

NAPLAN - Tracking Growth in Years 7 and 9

Our Year 7 and 9 students have recently completed their NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) exams. While we know testing can sometimes feel daunting, these assessments serve a dual purpose:

  1. For the Student: It provides a "snapshot" of their progress against national standards in reading, writing, language conventions, and numeracy.
  2. For the School: The data allows us to identify trends, celebrate strengths, and refine our teaching strategies to better support specific learning needs.

NAPLAN is not a pass/fail test; rather, it is a tool that helps us ensure no student is left behind and that our curriculum remains rigorous and effective.

The Path to Graduation for Year 12

Our Year 12 students are deeply immersed in their internal examination block. This is a high-stakes period that tests not just their subject knowledge, but their time management and resilience. These results are crucial for tracking their trajectory toward their final exams and tertiary entrance goals. We encourage parents to support them by maintaining a balanced routine of rest, nutrition and focused study.

Putting the Student at the Centre - Our "Magis" Approach

At the heart of our curriculum is a commitment to the Magis, the "more", striving for excellence by truly putting the student at the centre of everything we do. We recognise that every learner is unique, and our data-driven approach allows us to cater to this diversity:

  • Support for Diverse Learners: We utilise differentiated instruction and specialised scaffolds to ensure that students of all abilities can access the curriculum and find success.
  • Challenging Our Brightest Minds: For our high-achievers, we implement "low-floor, high-ceiling" tasks and extension strategies that push them to think critically and creatively, moving beyond the standard requirements to reach their full potential.

By focusing on the individual, we ensure that every student is challenged, supported and inspired to do more and be more.
