Music

Our music lessons continue to be lively and hands-on—just the way I like them!

Our youngest musicians are enjoying exploring the keyboards in the room, and I’m thrilled with their progress from week to week. We have also been singing songs using the two notes So and Mi. Our whisper phones help us to listen carefully and match the pitch.

In Years 2/3/4 we are working on developing our listening and rhythm skills, and  importantly, we are tracking our progress. New things are tricky, and it is important to take note of what is getting easier and celebrate progress. Here we are modelling our pasta necklaces, inspired by a song we sang about a pony named Macaroni.

Our senior students explored how music can bring people together and create shared emotions. It can inspire joy and connection within a community and we looked at examples such as charity and relief concerts. With the opportunity to perform at the Castlemaine State Festival approaching, we also discussed what a fantastic and meaningful experience it would be to take part in this community event. If you are free on the 20th of March, please encourage your Year 5 or 6 student to participate. Music is not only entertaining; it also has a powerful purpose and emotional impact—especially when people sing and perform together.

And here’s a small hint about another performance opportunity coming up: our School Fair! Our Year 5 and 6 students have been carefully rewriting the lyrics to a song, analysing how strong lyrics must fit both natural speech rhythm and melodic contour. Get excited—it turns out we have some very talented lyricists in the school.
