Ride to School - La Vuelta de Newlands

Friday 20th March

La Vuelta de Newlands – Ride2School Day - Friday 20 March

We are excited to continue preparing for our Ride2School celebration at Newlands Primary School, which this year we are calling La Vuelta a Newlands. In this article you will also find the map of the riding track and the different parking areas that will be used on the day.

This event celebrates active transport and encourages students to ride, scoot or walk to school while enjoying the positive benefits that movement has on our health, wellbeing and the environment.

How the morning will work

  • Arrival and bike parking

When students arrive at school, they will park their decorated bikes or scooters in their House parking area on the bottom oval. Please see the map to locate each House parking area.

Foundation (Prep) students will park their bikes and scooters in their classroom parking area instead. This location is shown at the bottom of the map where it says “Preps”.

Our Health and Movement Leaders and House Leaders will be helping students and families park bikes and scooters safely on the morning. They will be wearing yellow safety vests so they can be easily recognised.

After parking their bikes, students will go to their classrooms to drop off their bags and wait for their classroom teacher to mark the roll. Once the roll has been marked, classroom teachers will take students down to the bottom oval where they will return to their bikes and scooters in the House parking area. Foundation students will remain in their classrooms until later in the morning.

Day schedule

  • 8:45–9:00

Students arrive at school and park their bikes or scooters in their House parking area on the bottom oval. Foundation students park in their classroom area. Health and Movement Leaders and House Leaders will help families with parking.

  • After parking

Students go to their classroom to drop off their bags and have the roll marked. Classroom teachers then bring students back to the bottom oval to their House bike parking area. Foundation students remain in their classrooms.

  • 9:10 - House parade lap

Students in Years 1–6 complete the first lap with their House group following the light green track on the map. Teachers ride with their Houses. At the finish line, students get off their bikes or scooters and move to their classroom parking area to wait with their class.

  • After all Houses finish – Class parade lap

Each class will complete a second lap following the same track. Classes will go one at a time, starting with the Year 1/2 classes and finishing with the Year 5/6 classes. Teachers will ride with their classes.

  • After the class lap

Year 1/2 and Year 3/4 students park their bikes or scooters in the classroom parking area and return to their classrooms for learning.

  • Foundation buddy lap

Foundation students come down to the oval with their teachers and go to their classroom parking area. Their Year 5/6 buddies will accompany them for a smaller lap (black line on the map). Foundation students ride while their buddies walk alongside them.

  • End of the parade

Once Foundation students finish their lap, they and their Year 5/6 buddies return to their classrooms and learning resumes.

Bike decoration awards

During assembly, prizes will be awarded for the best decorated bikes and scooters. These will be judged by our Health and Movement Leaders and House Leaders.

Preparing for the day

Safety - Please check that your child’s bike or scooter is in safe working condition. Check brakes, tyres and helmets before the day.

Decorations

Students are encouraged to decorate their bikes and scooters. House colours and themes inspired by Spanish-speaking countries are welcome.

Practice

If needed, you may wish to practise riding or scooting with your child and think about the safest route to school.

Before School Care (OSHC)

OSHC staff are aware of the event. If signage is not yet set up when your child arrives, they can park their bike near the OSHC area and the oval. There will be time to move bikes to the correct areas before the parade begins.

Bike collection after school

Please remember to collect your child’s bike or scooter after school. There are not enough permanent bike parking spaces for everyone, and while the school grounds are locked overnight, we cannot guarantee the security of bikes left at school.

Parent volunteers

Thank you to the parents who have already offered their help. We have received your details and we really appreciate your support.

We are still looking for more parent volunteers to help on the day. Volunteers will assist with tasks such as marshalling along the track, supporting the start and finish areas, supervising off-bike areas, and helping ensure the event runs smoothly and safely.

If you are available to help, please add your name using the link below. We will contact volunteers soon with more details.
