Newlands Basketball Training Program

Newlands Basketball Training Program
We are very excited to announce the start of our Newlands Basketball Training Program, which will begin next week. This initiative is the first step towards building our own Newlands Basketball Club, and we are thrilled with the strong interest from our community.
For families who would still like to join the program, registration is still open.

Please note that the cost of the program is $99, which covers the Term 2 basketball program. Once registered, students will also be able to attend the remaining weeks of Term 1 training at no extra cost.
When does training start?
Training will begin next week before school in the gym.
Sessions run 8:00am – 8:45am, and students will enter through the gym gate near the front staff car park.
Training schedule:
- Tuesdays – Under 8s (students born in 2019 or 2020)
- Wednesdays – Under 10s (students born in 2017 or 2018)
- Thursdays – Under 12s (students born in 2015 or 2016)
Students should come dressed in comfortable sports clothing and runners.
If students come wearing sports clothes that are different from their school uniform, please make sure they bring their school uniform in their bag to change into after the session.
At the end of training, students will go directly to their classrooms with the rest of the students starting the school day. Parents do not need to stay, as staff will supervise the transition to class. The only exception is parent helpers, who will stay during the session to support the coaches.
Why does the registration link say the program starts in April?
Some families may notice that the registration page lists 22 April as the start date. This is because the $99 registration covers the official Term 2 program.
However, once families register, Players First Basketball are generously allowing our students to start training immediately, and the remaining weeks of Term 1 are included at no extra cost.
In summary:
- Families pay $99 for the Term 2 program (late April to late June).
- Students can begin training next week, with the rest of Term 1 included for free.
Coaching and training
All sessions will be delivered by professional coaches from Players First Basketball. These coaches will lead the training sessions, focusing on skill development, teamwork, game understanding and building confidence.
Parent helpers
We are also incredibly grateful to the parents who have volunteered to help with the program.
Parent helpers will attend training sessions to:
- Support the coaches during activities
- Help organise groups
- Encourage and support students during training
- Begin building positive relationships with the players
As we move closer to the winter competition season, parent helpers may also take on roles supporting or coaching teams during weekend games. This is still being finalised.
Forming teams
At this stage, teams have not been created yet.
During the first two weeks of training, the coaches will observe students and assess their skill levels so we can create balanced teams in each age group.
Once teams are confirmed, we will communicate further details about:
- The winter competition
- Game schedules
- How the league works
- Coaching roles
A growing club
This training program is the beginning of something very exciting for our school community. With so many students already involved, we are well on the way to establishing Newlands’ very own basketball club.
Thank you to all families for your enthusiasm and support. We look forward to seeing the students on the court next week.
