Science

Science in 2025 will be delivered in our new Science Room – it is located at the back of the art space, with a beautiful view of our school oval. The space has had some renovations over the holidays, with a dividing wall between the art and science rooms and a lovely plush carpet area for the children to sit on for our whole group times.

This term we will be focussing on Biological Science.

Biology is the study of living things. A biologist is a scientist who studies biology. Biologists try to understand the natural world and the things that live in it. These things include plants, animals, fungi, algae, bacteria, and viruses. The study of biology covers many areas

Foundation.

The Foundation unit this term is called Staying Alive. All animals, including humans, use their sensory organs to gather information about their environment.

The sharp eye, the cocked ear, or the careful sniffing of air can warn animals of dangers that might threaten their survival. Humans use senses to gather information not only critical for our immediate safety, but also for planning to meet our basic needs for things such as food, water and shelter.

Grade 1 will be looking at a unit called Growing Well. Every living thing on Earth has basic needs that must be met in order to survive.

Like all animals, we share many needs with plants, such as air, water and appropriate food. However, plants can live without us but we cannot live without them.

Grade 2 are working on a unit called Schoolyard Safari.

The world is teeming with animal life. Even the most unexpected places can host a diverse range of creatures.

As humans, we share our wonderful planet with many other animals. Taking the time to really look at another species can provide a window into the similarities and differences among living beings, and can help us to appreciate how we are all part of a single, gloriously complex ecological system.

Grade 3’s unit is Plants in Action – this unit provides students with hands-on opportunities to:

·       observe and compare dry and soaked bean seeds

·       observe and record the on-going process of the germination of a bean seed

·       explore the parts of a flower and consider which are required for pollination

·       observe fruits and the seeds inside them and consider the relationship between flowers and fruits

Students apply their new learning by:

·       planning and conducting an investigation into the factors that affect plant growth

Grade 3 will work on a unit called Among the Gumtrees.

Eucalypts are an important feature of Australian life, with over 900 species found in almost every corner of the nation. Eucalypts have adapted to survive both drought and bushfire—some rely on extreme heat or smoke to release and germinate seeds. Eucalypts provide shelter and food to many native animals, and some species are the sole food source for koalas.

Grade 5 will explore adaptations of Plants and Animals. In this unit we will explore the adaptions that plants and animals have made over time to survive to evolve and survive.

Grade 6 children will look at how salinity effects our environment and in particular farming in a unit named Rising Salt. Our very survival depends on a reliable source of natural resources, including food. Primary industries use their knowledge of how physical conditions of the environment affect the growth and survival of living things to ensure good yields. However they are faced with new environmental challenges, such as rising salinity and changing weather patterns, which provide a highly relevant context in which to investigate how living things are affected by such changes
