Kinder/Year 1

K/1 have had a great start to the year! We are settling into routines well, and Year 1 are already growing into their roles as the big kids in our room, helping our Kinder friends feel comfortable and confident in learning together.

Welcome to our new families and Mr Malcolm, our intern teacher this term.

If you couldn't make it to our meet the teacher night, hopefully you've read our handout and know more about the goings on in K1 for this term. Are you on our K1 messenger group yet? It's a great way to stay connected with us! This is where daily updates, quick reminders and sometimes fun photos of our learning can be viewed. You can even ask class questions here.

Thank you to Vicki Hulm from Snowy Valley Library Services for the donation of new Library bags for our class. If your child has a preferred bag at home, of course, they may use that instead.

Although it may seem like weeks, kinder have only been at school for seven days of learning. Learning the names of our first seven letters, their sounds and how to form them accurately every time has been our top priority. Alongside, we've delved into nursery rhymes, exploring rhymes and new vocabulary. We've uncovered water spouts where Incy might be hiding and even made the curds and whey that Miss Muffet enjoyed on her tuffet.

The poor spiders in these rhymes will not stand a chance in our K/1 classroom, as the students came together in the afternoon during Science and Technology to work on their design skills and make spider traps. There were so many ideas as you see in the photos!

What exactly are curds and whey?

Are there any cottage cheese lovers out there?  Cottage cheese is actually Little Miss Muffet’s curds. It’s very easy to make at home too!  Heat ½ a cup of milk in the microwave for 30 seconds to a minute (don’t let it boil - it just needs to be hot).  Add about a tablespoon of vinegar (or lemon juice) and stir.  Hey presto! You have curds and whey. Sprinkle on a little salt for flavour. A google search will help you find many ways to use both by-products of this process.
