The Term 2 topics for each year level are outlined below.
Foundation: "My Family"
Students will learn how to ask and say about family members in Chinese, including terms like "dad", "mum", and "siblings". They will also practice using the verb “like” in sentences and the possessive particle "de". Additionally, students will learn the Family Topic Song to reinforce vocabulary related to family members. They will engage in activities such as drawing their family tree and completing word search puzzles to further enhance their understanding.
Grade 1/2: "Greetings and Self-Introduction"
Building on the knowledge from Term 1, students will learn how to ask and say their names, ages, nationalities, and family members. They will create a self-introduction poster, including details such as siblings, parents' nationalities, and family members’ ages, and present it to the class and their groupmates. Students will also practice asking and answering questions such as “How old are you?” and “Where are you from?” through memory and matching games to reinforce their learning.
Grade 3/4: "Asking and Saying Dates, Birthdays, and Age"
Students will learn to ask and say dates, birthdays, and ages in Chinese. They will practice saying dates using months and days, and work on writing numbers from 1 to 100 in Chinese characters, trying according to their ability. They will create a Chinese calendar for the month of May. Students will also complete a variety of worksheets related to numbers and dates, tailored to their individual learning levels. By the end of the unit, they will be able to ask and answer when someone’s birthday is and say their own age and birthday in Chinese.
Grade 5/6: "Zodiac Animals & Lantern Festival"
Building on the Term 1 exploration of Spring Festival customs and traditional foods, students will continue in Term 2 with various engaging hands-on craft activities such as making red envelopes and paper lanterns. They will learn about the 12 Chinese zodiac animals, the story behind their selection, and associated Chinese vocabulary. The unit will conclude with the Lantern Festival, marking the 15th and final day of the Spring Festival, bringing cultural understanding and creativity together.
