Foundation Mathematics - Pattern!
In Foundation we have been inquiring into patterns. We are learning to represent, continue and create simple repeating patterns using different materials. We have enjoyed exploring patterns using colour, shape, drawing, collage, chalk and blocks… and even using our bodies! We have loved learning to describe patterns using letters, such as making an ‘AB’, ‘ABC’, ‘AAB’ or ‘ABB’ pattern. Reviewing the concept of patterns through our investigations has been a huge hit, and a wonderful way to use our learning authentically.
Please enjoy photos of our Foundation mathematicians in action!
Ways to support this learning at home:
Create a movement pattern like ‘clap, tap, clap’ (ABA) and see if your child can join in
Make snack patterns (e.g., apple, cracker, apple, cracker) and say the pattern aloud
Bead or pasta stringing: Make jewelry, like necklaces and bracelets, out of string and beads or pasta
Create a dance using pattern moves (e.g., jump, clap, shake-your-hips, jump, clap, shake-your-hips)
Find patterns in the environment (e.g., fences, tiles, clothing)
Draw a pattern and cover the end. Ask your child to predict what comes next. Can they work out what would come before?
Number sequences: extend students by finding the missing part in skip counting patterns (e.g., 2, 4, 6 _ , 10)
