Year Two Additive Thinking
Connection to the Mathematics Curriculum 2.0: Add and subtract one- and two-digit numbers using a variety of calculation strategies, such as doubles, near doubles, part-part-whole knowledge to 10, bridging tens and partitioning.
We are learning to add and subtract one and two-digit numbers. Additive thinking is connected to understanding the construction and representation of numbers, especially part-part-whole ideas and place value. We will be focusing on knowing when to add and subtract and choosing the correct strategy for the task or problem. This week we focused on mental strategies such as doubles, near doubles and number bonds to 10 and 20.
Next, we will be focusing on written additive strategies such as partitioning tens and ones and using number lines.
GAME: Go Fish! Make 10 version
You will need:
A deck of playing cards.
2 players or more players
The goal of the game:
To collect the most pairs of cards that make 10.
To prepare for the game:
Remove all picture cards and number 10 cards from the deck.
An ace equals ‘one’ in this game.
Shuffle the cards.
Deal 3 cards to each player (if 4 or fewer players) or 5 cards each (if more than 4).
Put the rest of the cards face down in a pile. This is the “fish pond.”
To play the game:
Take turns going clockwise.
On your turn, ask any player for a card that will enable you to make a pair that adds up to 10. For example if you have an 8, 4 and an ace, you might ask for a 2 or a 6.
If that player has the card you need they must give it to you. If they don't have the card they say “Go Fish!”
If they say “Go Fish,” you take one card from the fish pond.
Then it is the next player's turn.
Making a Set:
When you get a pair of cards that make 10, put them down in front of you. That’s one set!
Winning the Game:
Keep playing until all cards are gone and all sets have been made.
The player with the most sets wins!
