Future Stages and Tabletop Theatre | Talia Wighton and Lea Jenkins (Year 10)
Theatre Royal's Future Stages program offers students in Years 10–12 passionate about the performing arts a chance to engage more deeply with the industry through live productions, interactive discussions and hands-on workshops. Four of our St Mary's College students were selected in this program this year, two of whom have shared their experiences so far. Continue reading for Talia and Lea's report below.
The Theatre Royal Future Stages Program 2025 has been an astounding experience so far. We have made so many new connections with fellow theatre lovers and we have met so many of Tasmania’s most influential theatre fanatics. Additionally, we have had the privilege to view two shows within the Ten Days on the Island theatre festival titled 'Tabletop Shakespeare' and 'Goldfish'. This is an amazing opportunity for Drama students within the St Mary's community.

A suburban netball team. A new player. Cass says she wants to fit in but if she won’t play by their rules why does she bother coming at all? She claims to see something they cannot, a warning of sorts. All the other women want to do is play. But this player will push each of them to a point of furious revelation. Nothing will be left on the court once these women are done with their reckoning. A sweaty play about the petty and the profound, the mundane and the mythic, Contest asks how we might be with each other if we don’t have to win.
Performed in a series of vignettes, Contest is a highly physical piece of contemporary theatre, exploring current themes surrounding identity, the female body, and competition.
Please be advised the work contains adult themes and strong language in parts.
