Year 9 News

As Term 2 kicks off, Year 9 students have hit the ground running with a range of exciting experiences. Highlights include a hands-on Lego Sumo Competition at Gippsland Tech School, and an engaging visit to Myuna Farm.
Tech School Visit: Lego Sumo
On Wednesday 30th May, thirteen enthusiastic Year 9 students embarked on an action-packed excursion to the Gippsland Tech School, where they built their own robots and battled it out in a thrilling LEGO Sumo competition!
“The Morwell Tech School created a fun and engaging program for us. Building the Lego sumo robots was an incredibly enjoyable experience. It was also great to work with others and socialize outside of our usual friendship groups. Overall, it was a very positive experience, and we’re very thankful to the teachers and the school for giving us the opportunity to attend.”

“I absolutely enjoyed this day away from school, it felt like I had joined Lego Masters for a bit. The robot building and coding was super fun as this is the type of stuff I do daily for fun and to do it with one of my closest friends was a blast! I have not played with Lego in a very, very long time and to finally do so in a tournament style fight to the death was something I never saw coming. I loved building whatever I wanted and messing with my friends at snack and lunch at the Lego wall, and the result was absolutely something worth taking a photo of at the end. I really hope we get to go back there some time soon, as it was one of the most fun and engaging excursions I’ve been to in ages. Now the Lego EV3 is at the top of my Christmas Wishlist.”

Myuna Farm Visit
Students undertaking the Food Technology elective "Welcome to your Restaurant" recently attended an engaging and educational excursion focused on environmental sustainability and food production. The program provided hands-on learning experiences that helped students understand the impact of our food choices on the planet.
Throughout the day, students explored key topics such as habitat conservation, soil health, the carbon cycle, and the environmental and ethical implications of everyday food decisions. They also discovered how simple changes at home—like composting—can reduce personal environmental impact.
Our trip to Myuna Farm was a refreshing escape. Located in the southeast suburbs of Melbourne. The farm offers a perfect blend of education and fun for visitors. From the moment we arrived, the friendly atmosphere and hands-on experiences set a high standard. We got the chance to feed and interact with a variety of animals, including goats, sheep, chickens, and even rabbits. The farm also features a reptile house and aviary, adding to the variety of wildlife experiences.
Some of the highlights included:
- Learning about soil structure and its link to food production and climate change
- Making greener, more ethical food choices
- Understanding the composting cycle and its environmental benefits
- Spending time with the animals on the farm
- Exploring sustainability in action with examples like mud walls for thermal insulation and barns made from recycled materials

Year 9 Camp
Year 9 camp will be a discovery camp to Melbourne, run through the company DOXA. Students will get the opportunity to explore venues such as the Queen Victoria Market, Melbourne Cricket Ground, and Eureka Skydeck.
At this stage, there have been more than 60 students who have expressed interest in the camp, and this will result in some students missing out. Four factors will be taken into consideration when selecting 60 students. These four factors have been discussed with students in every assembly.
