Year 7 News

Welcome Back!
Term 2 has gotten off to a busy start for the Year 7 Team, and it isn’t going to slow down any time soon.
We have had a successful first few weeks back at school, with Awareness Day and our Parent Information night being a huge highlight last week. The Year 7 student volunteers did a sensational job giving up their lunchtimes to get organised and showed exceptional leadership skills on awareness day, supporting the grade 5/6 classes to move around the school. Our student leaders: Anabell, Bella, and Liam presented at the Parent Information night and shared their experience of transitioning to Kurnai College.
We had our Aspiring Athletes go to the Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS), and our girls' Volleyball team is heading out to the regional competition this week!
We have camp coming up in 2 weeks’ time and Mr White is busy organising bunk rooms and activity groups.
On Tuesday, 13/5, the Breakfast Club is hosting a Bacon and Egg breakfast, and the Year 7's will be completing their Attitudes to School Survey.
Last Term, we had our Foodbank Food fight! Year 7’s raised over $1500 for Foodbank Australia, and a special mention to Ada Wakefield and Keiran Swallow who raised the most money for the charity during our fundraiser. The kids had a sensational afternoon run by the Year 10 Peer Support leaders.
School Sport Update
Last term, Year 7 girls went to Morwell Leisure Centre by bus to compete in Volleyball. We won all our games, and on Friday, 9th May, we will be competing in the regional Gippsland competition. If we win on Friday, we will go to the state finals. – Heidi Massey
On the 29th of April, KAAP went to Melbourne to listen to Charlotte Hodgson. I play hockey, and this year I am going to Fiji to play for the Wanderers Education Sport Tour. I was excited to hear hockey’s number 1 Melbourne player speak about how she trains and learns at the Victorian Institute of Sport. The VIS trains people from different sports, including Paralympians, and is one of the best places to go, and I am glad my school organised for us to go. – Isla Godfrey.
Awareness Day
On Awareness Day, Kurnai College hosted over 200 students from all the Churchill Feeder Schools at the annual event. We had grade 5 and 6 students from Churchill Primary School, Churchill North Primary School, Lumen Christi Primary School, Yinnar Primary School, and Hazelwood North Primary School. The students participated in a variety of classes and were supported by Year 7 volunteers who came to school and gave up their lunchtimes to support the groups in the classrooms and around the school. I was exceptionally proud of all the Year 7 volunteers on the day who showed strong leadership, organisation, and commitment to making the day a success, including the tough task of nominating KPA awards to the 5/6 students! We had a BBQ lunch and finished the day with a packed-out parent information session in the evening.
On Tuesday 29th of April we had the student awareness day, where multiple schools came and had a day of year 7 and had classes like a normal day for a year 7 student. I got to help out on the day and support my old primary school classes at Churchill North, it was fun and Kurnai College is the best. – Tia Piri Revell.
Camp Coolamatong
We will be leaving for camp on Tuesday, 20th May, and returning Friday, 23rd May. If your child takes regular medication, you will need to provide this to the staff on Tuesday morning. Staff will administer medications during the camp. A list of what to pack has been sent home, please remember to label all items we often end up with many lost property items, which end up unclaimed and in the bin. I also recommend a very warm coat for the night walk and extra socks and shoes. Students often end up with wet shoes during the activities and need a dry pair to put on.
Students who are not attending camp are expected to attend regular school classes.
KPA Achievements
The Year 7’s have been absolutely exceeding all expectations for positive behaviour. The cohort received an astonishing 6,884 KPA’s last term, completely decimating the record held for the campus!
A huge congratulations to our highest KPA earners so far this term: Andy Taws, Blake Kerrigan, Jackson Holcombe, Kenzie Savage, Liam Rennie Taffs, Luca Larner, Seth McCausland, and Taliah O'Keefe.
Art
Year 7's have been busy in Art towards the end of last term and the start of this term. Below are some remarkable artworks they have created.
Learning Tasks Published
You may have recently received a notification that a learning task has been published. At the end of each term, students complete Common Assessment Tasks (CAT’s) which are not tests or exams, but tasks like other learning activities completed throughout the term that showcase the skills learnt. Teachers will assess these tasks, and the results are published to COMPASS for you to see. Unlike the learning behaviour updates, which report on behaviour, this is an academic assessment. Teachers will complete between 1 to 2 assessments, which are published to COMPASS each term as part of our continuous online reporting. If you have any concerns or worries, please don’t hesitate to contact the classroom teacher.
