As part of our community engagement program, Year 3 students walked to Victoria by the Park Aged Care in Elsternwick. During the visit, the children read picture story books with the residents and enjoyed speaking with them about how life has changed through the decades. Students enjoyed hearing stories from the past and sharing some of their own.
Some special moments included Nina Douglas, from 3ED, playing a piece of music on the piano, which the residents thoroughly enjoyed. Students from 3CS sang Mama by the Spice Girls, adding a musical touch to the morning.
It was a calm and positive experience for both the students and the residents.
Upon our return, students reflected, saying:
- "My highlight was meeting Gale, who is 103!" Nina Douglas.
- "I spoke to a person who has been on a warship. He was in the Navy. We heard about how his hearing was damaged by the loud guns going off". Kallum Welcome.
- "Bev was the resident that I spoke to. She did lots of art when she was young. She kept practising and has never been bored since". Jack Di Nuzzo.
- "I really enjoyed reading Witch, Out of the Dark, to one of the residents". Amelia Conway
- "The person I enjoyed speaking to was Margaret. I liked her because she made funny jokes". Isaac Cyril
- "I loved meeting Margot. She was really good at drawing flowers. She gave me some of her pictures". Giannis Mitroulas
- "I read The Day the Crayons Quit to one of the residents. At the end, he said he liked the book". Seamus Keating.
- "My favourite part of the visit was meeting Margot. She told me about how she designed napkins, plates and flowers for people's weddings". Charlotte Griffiths.
We thank the residents and staff at Victoria by the Park for welcoming us so warmly.
