A note from Mr Jackson

ANZAC Day Marked by Captains

Friday 25 April

It was a solemn and serious experience participating in the ANZAC Day ceremony at the Watsonia RSL on Friday. Our school captains joined the large crowd and laid a wreath on behalf of the community in remembrance of those lives that have been lost and the many more lives that have been fractured by war. It was a significant time to pause and value the rich democratic and open society we live in and strive to be.

Whole School Photo Day

Monday 26 May

We are looking forward to taking all our photos and snapping some memories of 2025! It is always a fun time to capture a fleeting moment that lasts forever.

We have been asked by our photographers to identify any students who do not wish to be included in school photos. There might be a large range of reasons this might be the case and we wanted to provide parents with an opportunity to withdraw your child from the experience. If this is the case, please contact Ally at the office or email her at rosanna.ps@education.vic.gov.au before the end of next week.

‘The First of May is Hats Away’

from Thursday 1 May

Our SunSmart Policy reminds us that sun safety is a shared responsibility. Staff, parents and students are encouraged to implement a combination of sun protection measures whenever UV levels reach 3 and above (typically from mid-August to the end of April in Victoria). While we have enforced a policy that encourages students to sit in shaded spaces without hats over the start of the year, this will be relaxed from the 1st of  May. As UV levels trend lower, students may still be encouraged to wear hats, particularly when the UV rating spikes.

Learning on Excursions

Our 4/5/6 Learning area travelled by train to visit the Immigration Museum last week. This was a powerful opportunity to reflect on the length of time Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have been present in this space but also the great diversity of nations that have arrived in the last two hundred years. All have come from different places with different and diverse reasons.

Our 3/4 Learning Area went by bus to the Nangak Tamboree Wildlife Sanctuary near LaTrobe University. Here students again gained further understandings about First Nation’s peoples connection to country as well as the traditional flora and fauna of Australia.

Such adventures beyond the school fence open up curios questions about the world and offer unique learning in authentic experiences. Thanks all who acted as volunteers as well as staff who took the time to ensure the experiences were enjoyed by all.

FORPS Fair Planning Meeting

Wednesday 30 April

A special thanks to the eager volunteers who spent their Wednesday night planning for the school fair. Make sure that you take the time to read the Fair updates in order to consider ways you can be involved. There are small and large roles that all contribute to the success of this important event. If you want to be involved, please make sure that you read the updates in the newsletter.

Mothers and Special Friends Celebrated

Friday 9 May

FORPS are celebrating all mums and those who have been important in the upbringing of students at Rosanna Primary School. You are invited to send along a small amount of money with your child to purchase a special gift from the FORPS Shop. If you have an hour or two to support the organising team they would love some help. Contact the office to find out more.

Curriculum Day: When Teachers Get Schooled!

Tuesday 22 April

While families enjoyed an extra day of school holidays, teachers started back on Tuesday with a lesson on learning. They explored a range of new understandings arising from science and the working of the brain. Using the recently released Victorian Teaching and Learning Model 2.0 teachers looked at new understandings of learning and shaping more explicit practices in supporting students’ learning growth.

A reminder to parents that another Curriculum Day is planned for Friday 6 June, a day when students will not attend school. This day leads into a long weekend with the King’s Birthday celebrated on Monday 9 June. Then, on Tuesday 10 June staff will be provided with a Professional Learning Day, a day when students do not attend. This is an excellent opportunity for families to spend some time away and return refreshed.

3/4 Learning Area Swimming

Starts on Friday 2 May

Don’t be surprised if the 3/4 students look a bit washed out over the coming weeks as they grow gills and flippers during their scheduled swimming lessons. These eight lessons are subsidised by the Department of Education who pay for the instruction component of lessons. The lessons conclude on Friday 27 June.

Bite into a Democratic Sausage at Rosanna Primary

Saturday 3 May

Join in with the team of volunteers who have raised their hand to help out at the sausage sizzle on Saturday. FORPS again will toss a delicious sausage that no one will be able to refuse as they line up to vote. Thanks to all who have brought together the day by baking a cake or squeezing the sauce!

Interschool Sports Starts Up

Friday 2 May

Students in Years 5/6 will take on Heidelberg on Friday in the first round of Interschool Sports. This first round will see us play Heidelberg Primary School in an ‘away’ match. We look forward to hearing about our experiences in Netball, Australian Rules and Teeball at the afternoon assembly.
