LOTE (Chinese)

Exploring China and Celebrating language learning
This term in the LOTE (Chinese)program, students from Prep to Year 6 have been busy learning about China's culture and language. Here's a glimpse into what we've been exploring:
Prep-All About China 中国简介
Our Prep learners are discovering what makes China so unique! We've looked at iconic sights like the Forbidden City (故宫) and the Great Wall of China (长城) in Beijing, as well as the native animal, the giant panda (大熊猫). In recent weeks, we also acquired some basic Chinese greetings.
Chinese Greetings:
Students have mastered the following friendly phrases:
- Hello- 你好
- Good morning-早上好
- Good afternoon-下午好
- Goodbye-再见
- Thank you-谢谢
Year 1 & 2: Months and Birthday 月份和生日
In Term 2, we emphasised our learning focus on numeracy, especially the numbers 1-12 in Chinese. Students understand the importance of adding the Chinese character '月' to convert a number into a month. Through singing performance and oral practice in class, the Year 1 and 2 learners confidently recalled the numbers 1-10 with specific hand gestures. Later in the term, they will be able to say the 12 months and talk about their birthday in Chinese, for example:
- 一月-January
- 我的生日是。。。My birthday is...
Year 3-6: Group Poster-Chinese Spring Festival 小组海报-中国春节
As a summative assessment, our upper primary students collaboratively created a vibrant group poster depicting the Chinese Spring Festival (春节). They consolidated their prior knowledge from Term 1 and enjoyed researching online about this most significant festival in China. Based on their self-reflection, the Year 3-6 learners showcased a deeper understanding of how people around the world celebrate the Chinese Spring Festival and the traditional food shared during family reunion dinners.
I am impressed with our students' enthusiasm and curiosity in exploring the language and culture of China. Stay tuned for more exciting Chinese activities as the term progresses!
