Level Six

Last week, our Year 6 students visited Doncaster Secondary College for a taste of high school life. They had the opportunity to explore the Year 7 classrooms and take part in a guided tour around the school. During the visit, students learned about a range of subjects they might encounter in secondary school. Below are some of their reflections.

Araz 6G: My favourite part of the visit was visiting the cooking room. I liked that because I like cooking!!

Parth 6G: I enjoyed looking in the homerooms because they felt like a nice calm place to chill and have fun.

Harris 6G: I liked looking at the gym, and seeing the basketball court inside. They had high quality nets and stadium seating.

Shahzad 6W: I thought the canteen was huge and even though I won’t be going to Doncaster for high school, I was excited because all high schools are similar and it seems like it will be really fun!

Aneeqa 6W: I noticed how massive the school is and I feel like I might get lost there. I also saw that there are lots of events and activities to join.

It was an exciting visit for all of us!

During Term 2, we have been learning lots of different things.

Reading – We have been focusing on persuasive texts. We explored different reasons why people write persuasive advertisements and looked closely at the techniques they use to influence the reader. We learnt about pathos (appeals to emotion), ethos (credibility) and logos (logic and facts) to help us make inferences and gain a deeper understanding of the author’s purpose.

Writing – Our students have recently applied their knowledge of persuasive techniques in their own writing. We looked at the structure of persuasive texts, how to write with purpose, and the impact different sentence types can have on the reader. We also practised writing strong arguments and used parts of famous speeches to improve our public speaking skills.

Maths – We have been learning all about fractions. We explored how to add and subtract fractions with different denominators, how to draw and compare fractions, and used problem-solving strategies to understand why and how fractions work in different contexts.

Lastly, our Year 6 students have continued to support their Prep buddies. As part of Education Week celebrations, they worked together on a special STEM project. The activity involved looking at the “Big Things,” or large landmarks, from around Australia. The students then designed and built a model using a variety of materials. It was a great opportunity for the Year 6 students to demonstrate their leadership and teamwork skills while guiding their buddies through the creative process.
