Muffins with Mum

On Friday 9th May, the Prep mums and special visitors were invited to our Mother's Day event, 'Muffins with Mum'. Each student enjoyed a special muffin treat with their mum/visitors and then engaged in a Mother's Day story followed by a special craft activity in their classroom. Afterwards, the Prep students performed a beautiful song titled, 'Skidamarink'. It was such a wonderful morning full of smiles and joy!

What have we been learning in Prep?

In Reading, the students have been been learning about the Super 6 Strategies of Questioning and Making Connections. They are learning to decode words in texts following the Scope and Sequence we use in Phonics. In reading groups, they have completed a range of activities to help them be successful readers. These activities have included, reading stories on the IPAD, comprehension tasks, activities linked to the Big Book, Phonics activities and choral/guided reading with their teachers.

In Phonics, the students have been learning about the sounds/letters k, e, r, u, b, h, l, y and z. They have learnt about vowels, consonants and CVC words. They have practised saying and writing these letters and words and recorded them on the mini whiteboards. Each week in Spelling, they have learnt a new word of the week. This week they have learnt to spell the word, 'zip'. Each week, students have also created a craft related to their 'word of the week'.

In Writing, students have been learning about sentences and have learnt to use simple checklists to edit their work. They have been writing about picture prompts and have been learning about using different sentence starters in  their writing. A highlight this term has been writing weekly letters to the class, VIP (Very Important Person).

In Handwriting, students have been focusing on letter formation including sizing of letters (upper and lower case), writing on the lines and one finger spacing.

In Maths, students have learnt about counting collections,  simple patterns, identifying numbers to 20 and 2D shapes. A highlight was completing a number Scavenger Hunt in the Junior School Building. This week, students have enjoyed a 2D Shape Hunt around the school grounds and playing Number Maths games.

In Theme, students have been discovering how food grows and learning about the 5 food groups. The students are looking forward to the upcoming Foost incursion which focuses on positive food education and creating their own healthy dish.

In ICT, students have learnt about being safe online and have learnt about strategies to use when taking a break from technology.
