Senior School Ethics Olympiad

On Monday, 12 May these senior boys competed successfully in the Senior School Ethics Olympiad.

  • Ashton Callus
  • Bowie McCabe
  • Arnav Dakhane
  • Bailey Thomas

They discussed ethical and philosophical themes such as:

  • Case 1 - Robot Love
  • Case 2 - Prenatal Screening Is Not Bliss
  • Case 3 - Assisted Dying
  • Case 4 - Fixing Fiction’s Flaws: The Dahl Dilemma
  • Case 5 - The Midnight Curfew
  • Case 6 - Tobacco Bans
  • Case 7 - Dog Meat Festival
  • Case 8 - Spotify, Surveillance, & You

And answered questions like:

  1. Rights vs. Responsibilities: How should the rights of teenagers to freedom and autonomy be balanced against their responsibilities to the community?

  2. Effectiveness of the Curfew: Is the curfew likely to be effective in reducing crime and disturbances, or are there better alternatives that could address these issues without restricting freedom?

  3. 3.Fairness and Discrimination: Is it fair to impose restrictions on all teenagers based on the actions of a few? Does this approach risk stigmatize young people as troublemakers?

  4. 4.Impact on Youth: What might be the impact of the curfew on young people’s social lives, mental health, and development of independence?

They performed exceptionally well and placed 4th overall, against teams from within and without Australia.  Well done boys. Excellent work.

Year 9 Law Courts Visits

This week, our Year 9 Humanities students took part in an enriching excursion to the Francis Burt Law Education Centre, supporting their studies in the civics and citizenship curriculum. Students participated in a mock trial, gaining hands-on experience with courtroom roles and legal procedures.

They also toured the Supreme Court and had the unique opportunity to observe real cases in both the Magistrates and District Courts. The excursion provided valuable insight into the workings of the Western Australian legal system and helped deepen students' understanding of the roles within a courtroom, the court hierarchy, and the importance of justice in our society.
