Year 3/4 News

Learning Centre Two

It has been a very busy couple of weeks in LC2 with the students working hard, being creative and very much engaged in their learning.

We hope all that all the mums, grandmothers and special women in student's our lives had a wonderful Mother's day and were spoilt by their children. It was terrific seeing many of you at school for our Mother's Day breakfast.

This Sunday is a special day for many of our Year 4 students who will receive the Eucharist for the first time. Please keep these children and families in your thoughts and prayers as they take the next big step on their faith journey.

Term 2 Overviews

Each term we follow the Victorian Curriculum and map out

the content we need to cover. We link this with our inquiry unit

to ensure there are real life connections for our students.

Please check out the overviews for Term 2.

English

In Literacy, the Year 3’s continued to complete their story board recount of the Indigenous Australian Dreaming Story, Woonyoomboo: The Night Heron. Students used their knowledge of digital media to navigate the story website to learn more about the lives and geography of Indigenous people of Australia. As Mother’s Day approached, we paused and recognized the love, strength, and care that mothers and mother figures show every day. Students were encouraged  to take a moment to reflect on what their mothers or caregivers meant to them and write about them. This week we looked at the Tiddalick The Frog text and students started to create their own scenes and characters for it.

In Year 4, the students have been learning about the DreamTime stories. Last week, they had  to make a storyboard about Frog and Brolga. They were given a storyboard and had to write and draw the main event, after they had to colour and show it to their teacher. This week we are learning about The Cunning Crow, we were given A4 pieces of paper and folded it into quarters. The students had to listen to 4 sentences and draw what came to mind, after they were finished and they added detail to their drawing they could start colouring in. The students are learning to add noun groups, verbs, adverbs, and emotion while writing a snapshot of one of the pages in The Cunning Crow. They shared their writing with others and used the 2 stars and a wish protocol to give feedback.

In Maths, our Year 3s have been learning to identify and represent  halves, quarters, thirds, fifths and tenths of collections, shapes and combining fractions up to one whole.

In Maths Year 4s were learning about length. the students enjoyed using the measuring equipment, they had trundle wheels, rulers, meter ruler and tape measures. This week hey explored perimeter drawing regular and irregular shapes in their books and working out the perimeter of these shapes.

Inquiry

The Year 3 students have been designing and creating their Digital Media Arts piece in response to a  recount an Indigenous Australian Dreaming Story. Students created a media art piece in the form of a poster, trailer, cartoon or digital artwork, which was displayed and presented in a peer viewed gallery walk.

In Year 4 they have been exploring how to use media arts and what tools to use. They discovered we can create media art by posters, videos, photos, ads and more. The students have been creating media art pieces using computers or paper based on the aboriginal and dreamtime story Frog and Brolga. Some students used websites like Canva,Brush ninja,Toony tool,Animation and Animoto to create their master piece. Other students used  paper: drawing or painting or molding clay to make and recreate the story. This week the students were focusing on details and were involved in a gallery walk to share their work.

Religion

In Religious Education, Year 3 students have continued to focus on The Road to Emmaus story. They learnt that through the disciples, we are taught to be followers of Jesus. They wrote about what happened after Jesus died and interpreted what Jesus’ disciples believed about him. Students wrote a letter from the disciples of Jesus, exclaiming their feelings and emotions about  Jesus being alive!

Year 4 students have been eagerly preparing for their first communion. Last Tuesday the first communion candidates took part in their First communion spirituality day. The students explored some of the prayers said at mass and the importance of the Eucharist in the lives of Catholics. Father Albert, Father Anh and Father Laurence came so the students could make their Reconciliation to prepare themselves for their First Communion. The students also made their banner for their communion using different shapes and symbols associated with Eucharist.

On Tuesday night some of the families came together for our Eucharist Family evening. It was a wonderful night organised by John. Father Anh came and talked about the importance of the Eucharist especially our First Eucharist and that it will be the first of many Eucharist celebrations for these students. The students and family had an opportunity to make bread together, this was great fun and they all said the bread tasted great. We continue to ask you to pray and support our First communion students as they make this  important sacrament.
