Year 1/2 News

Learning Centre One

Can you believe we’re already in Week 4? The past fortnight has flown by, filled with fun and engaging activities for our Year 1/2 students! From celebrating Mother’s Day with heartfelt creations to enjoying a live performance by the Mackillop Band, there’s been plenty of excitement. The hands-on learning has continued in the classroom too — a highlight being the students making their own bread, turning learning into a truly sensory experience!

A big Happy Mother’s Day to all the special women in the children’s lives in 1/2. We would like to thank all the parents that were able to attend the Mother’s Day morning. The students loved sharing some of what they learn and do in the mornings, especially with their Little Learners!

In Literacy, students have been exploring how images and sounds can influence the meaning of what we watch. They investigated how sound affects interpretation and how visual elements can shape emotions and understanding. Students examined how images made them feel and used visual clues to infer how characters might be feeling within a story. In addition, they explored movement-related verbs and began writing a procedure outlining the steps for their own dance. Once their procedures were complete, students started experimenting with recording their instructions to teach others how to perform their dance.

In Maths, students have been exploring the concept of length. They’ve been learning to use language such as longerlongestshorter, and shortest to compare and describe objects. To support their understanding, students used a variety of informal measuring tools—including icy pole sticks and unifix blocks—to measure and compare the lengths of different items around the classroom. It’s been a hands-on and engaging way to develop their measurement skills

In Religious, students have been learning about the events that followed Jesus’ resurrection. They explored the story of Jesus appearing to his disciples at the Sea of Galilee and reflected on how he often gathered with others to share meals. Through these stories, students are learning about the significance of coming together as a community, just as we do in the special meal of the Eucharist. They have also been comparing Gospel accounts from different perspectives, including how the disciples may have experienced these moments, deepening their understanding of the stories and their meaning

During Inquiry, our Year 1/2 students have been learning how to respond to and share media artworks in creative and meaningful ways. Using a fun and interactive app called Song Maker, students explored how music can be created digitally. They experimented with sounds, rhythms, and beats to compose their own original pieces of music. To extend their creativity, students then choreographed short dances to match the music they had created, thinking about how movement can express the mood and energy of their songs.

Inform and Empower

As part of our Digital Safety program in Year 1/2, students have been taking part in "Inform and Empower" sessions focused on the importance of balancing Screen Time and Green Time. These sessions help students learn how to make healthy choices when using technology and understand how to stay safe online. Please see the parent information form below to learn more about what we've been exploring in class and how you can support digital safety at home.
