Learning Centre Three
Where has that time gone?
We are already 4 weeks into the term and the students have continued to settle in. We can’t believe we have been at school for over 50 days!
Please find below this term's parent overview:
Mother's Day
We hope that all the mums, grandmothers and special women in our lives had a wonderful Mother's Day and were absolutely spoilt last Sunday. A big thank you to the mums who were able to join us last week in the learning space. The children loved showing you what their phonics lessons look like.
Phonics
We have continued to read the story Milo’s Birthday Surprise and have met more of Milo’s friends – Oscar Octopus, Daisy Dog and Gabby Goat. It has been great to see the students become more confident in the Chitter Chant where we remember Milo’s friends and the sounds the letters make. We have been practicing more and more with our whiteboards, writing the letters, focusing on letter formation as well as writing different CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words. Focus groups are definitely under way with students participating in a reading focus group each week.
This week, your child will continue to bring home their reading journal and a new decodable book in their book bag. Inside the journal, there’s a QR code you can scan to access a digital version of the books we’ve read in class. We encourage you to read with your child each night and return the decodable book, reading diary and bag every Thursday. Your child’s teacher will be looking through the reading diary, keeping track of the amazing reading each child has done and seeing which students are close to reading for 25 nights. A new book will be sent home each Friday. We are looking forward to seeing if anyone will receive their 25 nights of reading certificate in the next 2 weeks!
Literacy
In Literacy, we have been looking at different books written by Joy Cowley. We have rotated through the books ‘Hairy Bear, Mrs Wishy Washy and Barrel of Gold’ completing activities such as: rating the book out of 3 stars (1- did not like the book, 2- it was okay and 3- loved the book), looking at sentence structure and placing jumbled sentences in order and looking at the sequence of the story from beginning to end.
This week we looked at ‘The Jigaree’ and continued to focus on the structure of a sentence. The students began to write sentences with the sentence structure ‘I can see a…’ , and chose words brainstormed by the class to finish the sentence. Students have been learning that sentences start with a capital letter, end with a full stop and that we put a finger space between words when we write.
Maths
In maths we have been continuing to develop the students' understanding of numbers using part-part-whole. We have been looking at how a whole number can be partitioned into smaller parts including splitting a whole number into 2 parts and 3 parts. An example of this could be if the whole number was 10, the parts might be 4 and 6 or 4, 4 and 2. They have completed hands-on activities using counters and cards, memory cards and unifix cubes.
Religion
Over the past two weeks, students have continued to learn about the Easter story and started to reflect on how they think the women would have felt throughout the different parts of the story. The students used their puppets they created to retell the Easter story and have reflected on times where they might have felt the same way as the women did.
Inquiry
This fortnight, students have continued looking at different types of Media. Last week, we watched some disney shorts as a form of video and identified how a character might be feeling, looking at their facial expressions and identifying the reason why. This week, we have explored some famous artwork such as Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night and expressed how it makes us feel and why. The students loved having the opportunity to create their own media art through the use of paint.
