PRINCIPAL'S REPORT

Dear Parents and Carers,
As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler, there is no less happening at SCSC!
I hope you enjoy reading some of our recent highlights in this newsletter.
ANZAC Day Commemorations.
While week one of Term 2 was only three days short, we had a strong focus on our annual ANZAC Day Commemoration Assembly. Our College captains commenced proceedings before introducing Wing Commander (Ret.) Daryll Topp who again joined us as our guest of honour and led proceedings with a story outlining the history and importance of ANZAC Day for our students.
The gym was a full house and it was quite a sight to see our students from every year level in full school uniform, participating, cooperating, listening and learning from our presenters. I know I speak on behalf of all staff when I say that we were extremely proud of the respect they showed throughout the service.
On ANZAC Day it was again my pleasure to accompany college captains, Sienna, Riley and Lylah, who braved the cold, wet weather to attend the Torquay RSL ANZAC Day dawn service at Point Danger. This is the largest commemoration service in Victoria outside the Shrine of Remembrance in Melbourne. Our captains were the first speakers on the program and shared stories of fallen soldiers from our local area. They then laid a wreath on behalf of the College community.
I would like to extend my thanks to all community members who supported these important annual events on the College calendar.
Footy Champions.
Last Thursday our Year 11 & 12 girls and boys football teams competed in the Barwon and Bellarine Football competition.
Despite being one player down our girls smashed some strong teams, winning every game and are now division champions! Congratulations to all involved. We look forward to seeing more success as our young women embrace future football opportunities.
Our boys team played equally strong with convincing wins over two other schools to make it through to the final. They played extremely well and finished runners up after a very close game.
Academic Celebration Emails.
To recognise the academic success of our students we are sending emails to families informing them that their young person has achieved over 90% on an assessment task. These emails are in recognition of the student’s hard work, dedication to their learning and consistency in striving for excellence in their studies.
For Term 1 it gave us immense pleasure to be able to send 288 academic excellence emails to parents and carers! It’s testament to the high number of students we have living up to our College value of ‘striving’ for improvement and our College motto of ‘Embrace challenge, achieve excellence’.
VM Coffee Van.
Our VCE VM students have recently re-launched the SCSC coffee van, bigger and better than ever, offering a full variety of coffee styles and hot chocolate to our school staff and senior students. This year the VM team have doubled the output and are running the coffee van on two mornings per week serving up high quality brews using locally roasted Mikro coffee beans.
This initiative, along with others including the upcoming car wash, are teaching our students the practicalities and realities of running their own small businesses. They are learning essential work related skills as well as applying their literacy and numeracy learning in practical ways. We look forward to supporting our VCE VM students on their future entrepreneurial initiatives.
Parent / Teacher / Student Conferences.
Our Week 2 Parent / Teacher / Student Conferences were a great success with over 1,750 appointments made. This is a huge increase over previous years and a testament to the high quality conversations between teachers, students and family members. Walking around the different spaces throughout the College there was a very genuine sense of enthusiasm and positivity. Feedback from all involved was that these conferences were a great success and a very worthwhile touchpoint between school and home.
Thank you to all those parents and carers who made the time to come and speak with us. We appreciate your ongoing support and interest in your child’s education.
Thank you for reading. Take care.
