In the first week of Term 2, a large group of Year 9 students from both the Enterprise and Food and Hospitality classes were able to enjoy a unique learning experience at Agfest, alongside staff members Ms. Hingston, Ms. Coates, and Mr. Bredenhof. Departing promptly at 8:30 Friday morning, our crew travelled along Bass Highway in the capable hands of Mr. Atchison. While we anticipated heavy traffic, we arrived at our destination in good time.
After a safety briefing and the distribution of site maps, which included check-in times and meeting points, students entered the showgrounds as an excited and bubbly group, ready to seize the day. Staff located the first check-in point together with students, before students then split into groups to begin their assigned activities.
Enterprise students were assigned the mission of investigating the marketing strategies used by Agfest businesses. Many students discovered firsthand the effectiveness of a good freebie in helping build a connection with customers. Meanwhile, Food and Hospitality students had the opportunity to interview food stall owners and learn what it takes to run a business at a large public event – as it turns out, it requires a lot of preparation!
Throughout the day, students consistently checked in at the right times, helping the excursion run smoothly and allowing us to return to Devonport a little ahead of schedule, where we could close in prayer, thanking God for a good, safe trip.
From my conversations with my Enterprise students afterwards, it was clear that the trip gave them some valuable insights into real-world marketing. On top of that, students had a great time together, enjoying the giveaways, trying out various stall activities, and watching animal shows.
All in all, it was a successful and memorable day of learning beyond the classroom, and a good opportunity for students to build community with each other, and practice taking on more responsibility.
As part of our ongoing partnership with Leighland Christian School, DCS secondary student are invited to attend their Careers Expo on Thursday, May 15th.
It's never too early to start thinking about future career options for our students, and this event is a great opportunity to explore potential pathways beyond schooling.
