1/2KT Learning - Miss Kim

In Inquiry and Science, we have been learning about changes in the physical world around us. Last Thursday, the 1/2s embarked on an excursion to TwistED Science in Moorabbin. They put their scientific thinking and observation skills to the test through hands-on workshops and play-based learning.

During the curriculum-based workshops, students investigated the ways in which light and sound are produced, and how they are sensed by our eyes, ears and touch. Students conducted simple experiments involving tuning forks and ping pong balls to observe the vibrations of sounds, and how these sounds could be sensed in different ways. The concepts of volume and pitch were also explored when students forming a band of unique instruments. Futhermore they experimented with strings, water and cups of various sizes to amplify a sound.

This workshop provided an opportunity for early exposure to STEM in a fun and engaging way while encouraging teamwork and cooperation amongst students across the 1/2 cohort.

The second half of the excursion involved students being taken to a science play-based learning area and, by design, were given minimal instructions. Students developed their critical and creative thinking skills while engaging with different installations, including transforming sand, giant bubbles, reptile encounters, shooting rockets, flying paper planes and immersive optical illusions. The explorative nature of the environment allowed students to satisfy their curiosity, practicing their problem-solving skills and discovering new ways to interact with the space and with each other.

Engaging with Science and Inquiry in hands-on ways provides students with valuable opportunities to deepen their understanding of how things work and why things change. We will continue to investigate big questions about the world through interactions with materials and space this term in our classroom.
