Understanding Guided Reading

One of the main ways we support reading growth is through an approach called Guided Reading. This method helps us meet each child where they are and support them step by step on their reading journey.

What Is Guided Reading?

Guided Reading is when the teacher works with a small group of children who are at a similar reading level and specific reading skills are targeted to support their growth in reading. The teacher leads the group, choosing books that match their skills while also helping them to develop new skills in reading. This is referred to as an instructional level. Books that aren’t too easy or too hard. This focused time allows for more personal support and attention.

How It Helps Your Child

  • Personalised Support: Teachers carefully observe and assess each student to understand their reading strengths and areas that need support through formal assessments and informal observations.
  • Building Confidence: Before reading, the group unpack key vocabulary, the teacher initiates discussions that activate student’s prior knowledge and predictions are made about the story.  This helps students feel more confident and ready to read.
  • Flexible Teaching: Teachers are able to complete formative assessment during this time and adjust what and how they teach based on how students are doing.
  • Working Together: Students are encouraged to discuss stories and help each other. This makes reading more fun and builds teamwork.
  • Reflecting After Reading: After finishing a book, time is taken to talk about what what was read. This helps the students think deeply and connect personally with the story.

Why It Matters

Our goal is not just to teach our students how to read—but to help them love reading. Guided Reading helps students see reading as something meaningful and enjoyable, setting them up for lifelong learning.

Careers Week

This year’s Careers Week at Trinity was brought to life with the help of some very special guests—our parents! We were thrilled to welcome families who generously took time out of their busy schedules to share their work experiences with our students.

Throughout the week, students heard firsthand about careers in fields such as healthcare, engineering, business and more. The students loved hearing about the different jobs and no doubt had them thinking about what they might want to do when they are older.

Parents didn’t just talk—they inspired. Many brought in uniforms, or real-life stories that made their work come alive for our curious young minds.

We are incredibly grateful to all the parents who participated. Their support helps us build a stronger, more connected school community and makes a lasting impression on our students.

Another highlight of the week was having our students dress up as what they want to be when they grow up. What a stunning spectacle our whole school parade was. A special thank you to Miss Kate for organising these wonderful learning opportunities for our students.

Staying in Touch

If at anytime you would like to chat about the learning at Trintiy, or you have any questions or concerns about your child's learning, please do not heistate to see your child's teacher, Mr Ru or myself.
