Junior School poetry writing

Grayson Ward, Year 4

Several classes throughout the Junior School have been focusing on descriptive poetry. In English Enrichment, we've been learning about different types of poems and how to create our own.

We've been studying a poem called The Eagle by Alfred Lord Tennyson. It describes an eagle clasping a tall wall with its claws and leaping off with great power and with sharp eyes.

We've been looking at the poem's structure and have used it as an inspiration to write our own poems. Some students have also entered their poems in the My Brother Jack writing competition.

Here are some of the poems we've created:

HAMSTERS

Small, fluffy, pink paws hugging its precious acorn

Sweet little sparkly eyes staring shyly at the giant, tall tree

Unique, pointy, orange ears twitching in the breeze

Hardworking, tired nose sniffling and searching for more acorns

Short, little legs, standing in the middle of the court

Claire Liu, Year 2

THE WOLF

Incredible, soft fur, so white

Sharp claws, strong strength, for a good fight

Sleeps in the light, hunts in the night

Like a dangerous thief he prowls

As fierce as a guard he growls

A beautiful sound when he howls.

Jayden Lin, Year 4

THE HIPPOS

Eating lunch with the heavy hippos

Silently moving on their tiptoes

Hippos swimming through Marra river

Never once giving a slight shiver

With their pink belly always tanned

Constantly lying on the hot sand.

Aero-schools Aerobics Competition

Emily Piao, Year 4 and Mindi Abeyrathne, Year 5

On Sunday 29 June, three of us (Mindi, Emily and Sophie Kennedy) proudly represented the School in our very first aerobics competition of the year. This competition was to help us prepare for the State Championships and get used to performing in front of large crowds.

After two full terms of training with the supportive Mrs Chandler, we were ready to show our routine. For the competition, we wore stunning and elegant outfits - sparkly leotards in magenta, navy blue and gold, kindly donated by Year 1 mum, Alanna Partridge.

The moment we stepped inside, the nerves kicked in. Inside the training gym, we saw all the other teams we'd be competing against - many of whom looked incredibly advanced and much larger than ours! Doubt began to creep in.

We started by warming up, and then moved onto practising our whole routine. We did this a couple of times, with Mrs Chandler checking our formations and moves, making sure we knew exactly what to do. Sometimes, one of us would use the wrong arm or leg, or get the timing wrong. Luckily, Mrs Chandler is a great coach, so she had us back on track in no time.

After this, we went to the balcony to watch a few of the performances before heading backstage. Finally, we heard Kilvington Grammar School being introduced on stage. Hearts racing and palms sweaty, we took our positions. Mindi clapped her hands to get everyone into formation and then - ding! The music began.

We executed our routine without hesitation, smiling through the stress - just like Mrs Chandler said we would. While we were performing, we could see the judges sitting at a long table, all watching us carefully - checking our moves, our timing and whether we stayed inside the box.

After a few more teams performed, it was time for presentations. We knew the odds were against us, but deep down we still held onto a pocket of hope. Despite not placing, we knew we had done an amazing job performing at our first-ever aerobics competition.

This week we competed in the State Championships against over 35 teams from all over Victoria. The competition was tough, and we did our best performance on the day.

It has been a fun year learning aerobics and we are already excited about next year and will start training very soon.
