Food Technology

Welcome to the latest and final update from the Food Technology department for 2024! Our students have been busy honing their culinary skills, exploring new recipes, and mastering key techniques to become confident and creative cooks. Here’s a recap of some of the delicious dishes and exciting activities that have taken place in the past few weeks of Term 4.

Café Culture Elective: Sweet Baking and Creative Creations

The term began with a sweet treat as our students perfected the art of baking brownies—rich, fudgy, and a firm favourite! They also embraced the festive season by baking and decorating Christmas Shortbread, adding their own personal touches with icing and sprinkles. In another creative session, students crafted sweet pizzas, using soft dough bases and topping them with chocolate spread, marshmallows, and sweet treats. These sweet pizzas were a huge hit, allowing students to experiment with flavours and presentation in a fun, hands-on way!

One of the standout creations this term was the Brookie, a combination of the beloved brownie and chocolate chip cookie dough, which quickly became a favourite among the Café Culture students. This hybrid treat, with its chewy chocolate chip cookie dough layered with fudgy brownie, became an instant hit for its irresistible texture and flavour. The Brookie was not only a delicious addition to the production classes but also a perfect example of how students blend their love of classic desserts with a touch of creativity and innovation.

Year 7/8 Food Technology: Oriental Chicken Kebabs, Garden Salad & Fruit Salad

Our Year 7/8 students were busy preparing Oriental Chicken Kebabs, paired with a fresh garden salad and vibrant fruit salad. It was a wonderful opportunity to practice knife skills, balance flavours, and learn about healthy eating. The students worked together to create dishes that were both delicious and nutritious, demonstrating their growing confidence in the kitchen.

Festive Gingerbread Decorating

The festive season came alive as students made and decorated gingerbread cookies. This activity allowed them to showcase their creativity while learning the essential steps of making gingerbread dough, rolling it out, and decorating it with icing and colourful toppings. It was a fun and festive way to celebrate the season, with students’ unique gingerbread creations stealing the spotlight.

VCE UNIT 2 Food Studies Morning Tea Assessment Task

The highlight of the term was the Food Studies Morning Tea Assessment Task. Students applied their knowledge and skills to plan and prepare a morning tea for staff and volunteers at Edenhope College. They worked together to create a wonderful selection of both sweet and savoury items, including scones, sandwiches, slices, sausage rolls, quiches, and biscuits. Their teamwork and attention to detail truly paid off, and the results were impressive. This task was a fantastic opportunity for students to combine their culinary skills with real-world experience and produce something truly special.

Girls Day: Rice Paper Rolls & Fruit Platters with Yoghurt

During our special Girls Day, students learned how to make fresh, healthy rice paper rolls. Filled with crisp vegetables, aromatic herbs, and protein-rich options, these rolls were not only a treat for the taste buds but also a fun and interactive dish to assemble. This hands-on session gave students the chance to explore

healthy eating choices while developing a greater understanding of the nutritional benefits of fresh, wholesome ingredients. In addition to making the rolls, students also enjoyed a vibrant fruit platter served with yoghurt. This activity highlighted how food nourishes both the body and mind, showing students the importance of eating a variety of colourful, nutritious foods to maintain energy, focus, and overall wellbeing. The fruit platter served as a reminder of the simple, yet powerful, role healthy foods play in keeping us feeling our best.

Year 7 Transition 2025

Edenhope College had the pleasure of welcoming the Year 7 students for 2025 to their second transition session on November 21st. As part of this, they experienced a hands-on lesson in Food Technology, where they learned the rubbing-in method of making dough while preparing delicious cheese and bacon scrolls. This was a fantastic introduction to baking and pastry techniques, and students had a great time working with flaky dough and savoury fillings. Additionally, students participated in a Maths lesson and a Careers session, where they explored various career options virtually with the LLEN (Local Learning and Employment Network) from Horsham. This gave them valuable insight into future pathways and the exciting opportunities that await them.

A Year of Growth and Achievement

The Food Technology students have truly excelled in 2024, and the progress they've made throughout the year has been nothing short of inspiring. From perfecting baking techniques to preparing savoury meals and experimenting with festive creations, each student has embraced every opportunity with enthusiasm and creativity. Their teamwork, confidence, and growing skills in the kitchen have been a joy to witness, and it’s exciting to think about what the future holds as they continue to develop their passion for food.

A huge thank you to all the students for their hard work and dedication this year. Watching them grow and shine in the kitchen has been a true pleasure. Here’s to many more delicious adventures ahead!
