Maths/Science Activity Day : Tuesday 17th December
Nature/ Mental Health/Biodiversity
Requirements: Students need to wear suitable shoes for walking and have a broad brim hat and water bottle.
Students will complete a bush walk, quiz and scavenger hunt in mixed - aged house teams. They will build an ecosystem, play games to familiarise themselves with Australian animals and plants, work as a team to complete a beautiful mindfulness colouring jigsaw and read how Nature is like a classroom for mental and emotional well-being. The day is to appreciate nature, build relationships and working as a team to complete tasks.
Biodiversity is the term used to describe the variety of all living things. It makes human life on Earth possible. It provides many benefits, including food, medicines and industrial products. It supplies clean air and water, and fertile soils.
One quote from David Attenborough
“Every breath of air we take, every mouthful of food that we take, comes from the natural world. And if we damage the natural world, we damage ourselves.”
Vasyl Sukhomlynsky was a famous Ukraine teacher who lead the world with his methods. He survived famine as a child, and the battlefield after been conscripted to fight in World War II. He was injured defending Moscow and nearly lost his arm and gained shrapnel. When he returned home to his Ukraine village he learnt how is baby son and wife were tortured by the German’s and killed. He could not fathom how anyone born of a mother could commit such atrocities. Vasyl Sumomlynsky devoted his life to teach children to have empathy and be kind from very young age. He wanted a humane future generation. He demonstrated respectful relationships and used beauty in nature and art to teach students and encouraged students to take responsibility for their environment.
Other educators also believe if humans are to respect each other, they must learn to appreciate nature. If they do not a good relationship with living things there is less chance of them growing up and having healthy relationships with other humans.
Research has shown that Biodiversity is essential for both our mental and physical wellbeing. Biodiverse environments can help us recharge. For example, people living in neighbourhoods with more birds report being less stressed. Another study looked at the views people have from their houses and found that those with views of lots of different plants, shrubs and trees had significantly lower levels of cortisol – one of the main stress hormones.
The day will give students a chance to practice respect and understand and value everyone, including those who maybe different.
Thank you Mrs Hocking, Mrs Hausler and Mrs Bezuidenhout for assisting with the day.
