Staying Safe and Looking After Your Mental Health: School Holidays

The school holidays are often seen as a time to relax, recharge, and enjoy quality moments with loved ones. However, for some people, this time can bring its own set of challenges. With the end of the school year and the pressure of exams behind us, it's an important opportunity to focus on both mental health and personal safety.

Prioritise Self-Care

During the holidays, it’s essential to take care of yourself. Balancing relaxation and activities that help you unwind can significantly improve your mental well-being. Whether it's going for a walk in nature, reading a book, practicing a hobby, or simply taking time for quiet reflection, find what helps you recharge. It’s also important to make time for rest and sleep—your body and mind need it.

Stay Connected

Holidays can sometimes feel isolating, especially if you're not able to see friends or family in person. Don’t hesitate to reach out to people you care about—whether it’s through a phone call, text, or video chat. Having someone to talk to can make a world of difference if you're feeling down. It’s okay to acknowledge when you’re struggling and to let others know how you’re feeling.

Ask for Help When Needed

If you're feeling overwhelmed by stress, anxiety, or any other mental health challenge, remember that help is always available. There are confidential, free support services ready to assist you during tough moments. Lifeline (13 11 14) and Kids Helpline (1800 55 1800) are both 24/7 services that provide support, advice, and guidance for those in need.

Check In with Family Members

If you’re a parent or caregiver, take the time to check in with your children during the break. Sometimes, young people may not openly express how they’re feeling, but creating a safe space for them to talk about their thoughts or concerns can help them feel supported. Encourage open conversations and let them know that they’re not alone in whatever they’re going through.

Be Mindful of Boundaries

While the holidays are often filled with social gatherings, make sure to listen to your own needs and set boundaries. If you need time alone, it’s perfectly okay to take it. If certain events or activities feel overwhelming, don’t be afraid to politely step back.

Focus on Small, Positive Actions

Small steps toward maintaining your mental health can make a significant difference. Whether it’s practicing mindfulness, staying active, journaling, or simply taking a few deep breaths when stress arises—these actions can have a calming effect and help you manage day-to-day challenges. Remember, help is available. Looking after your mental health and safety is just as important as any holiday plans. Taking steps to care for yourself, maintaining connections, and seeking help if needed can help you make the most of this break. And always keep in mind that support is only a phone call away. Stay safe, look after yourself, and enjoy the time to relax and recharge!

If you are concerned about your child’s mental health and you suspect they are thinking about suicide:

Tell them what you have noticed – share your concern

  • Ask them directly if they are thinking about suicide
  • Listen to their pain – what’s on their mind and why it matters so much to them
  • Provide personal support that helps keep them safe
  • Seek further help – from family and friends, from people who care, from a local GP, a counsellor, psychologist, or the Emergency Department of your local hospital
  • For anytime, twenty-four seven, during the school holiday break you are also able to contact The Kidshelpline on 1800 55 1800 for any issues or concerns.
