Holiday Cheer
As the year winds down and the holiday season approaches, the Foundation teachers are embracing the festive spirit with full hearts and lots of creativity! The classrooms are beginning to sparkle with holiday cheer, featuring bright decorations, twinkling lights, and colourful student-made displays.
To celebrate a fantastic first year of schooling, we’ve planned a variety of engaging craft activities that will keep our students busy and excited over the coming weeks. From making glittery ornaments to designing festive cards and decorations, each activity is a chance for the children to express their creativity and share their joy. It’s heart-warming to see their skills and confidence flourish as they proudly show off their creations.
This time of year also gives us a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the incredible journey our students have had in their first year of school. They’ve grown so much academically, socially, and emotionally, and it’s a privilege to celebrate these milestones with them. By combining holiday fun with meaningful learning experiences, we aim to make their final weeks in Foundation a memorable and joyful conclusion to a remarkable year.
BQT Science Skills
In Week 8, Year 1 took part in a gummy bear experiment and a Mad About Science incursion where we further explored our BQT question about how everyday materials in our kitchen can change. We explored how materials can change both chemically and physically.
In the gummy bear experiment we predicted how gummy bears might change when soaked in 4 different types of liquids. We let them soak for 24 hours and then observed the changes and attempted to explain why they had changed. We were surprised to see that the gummy bears dissolved in water and also in vinegar but they grew bigger in both bi-carb water and salt water.
During the Mad About Science incursion we first soaked Orbeez in water to see how they physically change from a solid state to a gel state and how they increased in size. Next we experimented with bi-carb and vinegar and how when mixed together they form a gas that can inflate and even EXPLODE a zip lock bag! Finally we explored the alkaline scale of different liquids by observing the colour changes when they have cabbage water added to them. This was a great incursion to round out our BQT unit and really allowed the students to put their science skills of predicting, observing and explaining to the test!
