Farewell Year 6

Year 6 Students

Friday 20 December 2024 will be the final day of primary school for our Year 6 students as well as many of our families.

This year we say goodbye and thank you to 55 long-standing families:

Leaving from 6A: Bassett, Brennan, Burroughs, Cuskelly, Dennis, Evans, Fitzpatrick, Ling, Lunt, Mawdesley, McDonald, Oxlade, Powell, Pritchard, Talwar, Viegas, and Wheeler families.

Leaving from 6B: Farr, Kitney, Lester, Lewis, McCowan, McOrist, Roberts, Rousch, Thompson, and Voyce families.

Leaving from 6C: Brice, Garlick, Gehradte, Hawkins, Hillis, Holmes, Lane, Maltarollo, Markham, Neilson, Peoples, Soloviev, Stephens, and Wells families.

Leaving from 6D: Balpe-Leahy, Boyes, Clarke, Davey, Harris, Hodsman, Hordejuk, Jung, Kirk, McMahon, Meng, Peirce, Rowsell, and Taylor families.

When reading though these names we can also remember the contribution these families have made for the school over the years they have been associated with the school.  Many of these names can be associated with our fetes, concerts, literacy programs, graduation evening, and always being there to provide positive support and encouragement.

This year our Year 6 students have demonstrated excellent student leadership for our entire student body.

Mini Olympics

The students from Years 5 and 6 managed our whole school mini-Olympics in Term 3. This task was designed as a learning task for PE. Our entire student body enjoyed this unique event where children of all ages teamed as one.

Mega Market

This student-led event was one aspect of their Unit Of Inquiry ‘How We Organise Ourselves’, an initiative associated with their economics unit of work involving supply and demand, profit and loss, and a project that assisted all their families with financial support.  This was also a unique event and one that all of our student body enjoyed immensely.

Speaking and Listening Learning Tasks

Our Year 6 students demonstrated their exemplary speaking skills by conducting our Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services. It is wonderful hearing the students share aspects of their family history and demonstrating their knowledge and understanding of these two whole school events.

Year 6 Exhibition

In Term 3, the Year 6 students began their Unit of Inquiry, ‘How the World Works’, focusing on the central idea, ‘Exploration of interests and passions inspires learning and innovation’.

They developed their lines of inquiry and found answers to their wonderings and questions. All groups defined their problem, inquired into the impacts on society and the environment, and researched existing initiatives to address their global issue.

On Tuesday 30 July, their learning was showcased at the Year 6 Exhibition, where students shared their hopes and dreams for the year 2040. The event was a remarkable display of young minds engaged in shaping a better future. Each student presented their vision for tackling pressing challenges such as domestic violence, youth mental health, and shrinkflation, showcasing their understanding of the world and their desire to make a positive impact.

The exhibition featured a variety of creative projects, including models, posters, and interactive digital displays, all centred around the theme of a sustainable and inclusive future.

Through their work, the students not only demonstrated their knowledge of global issues but also conveyed optimism, determination, and a sense of responsibility for the world they will inherit. The exhibition was a testament to the power of our students in driving change, and it left visitors inspired by the thoughtfulness and ambition of the future for tomorrow.

We could not have been prouder of the students with the way they presented themselves, showcasing an incredible array of knowledge they have built upon over their last seven years of schooling.

Extra-Curricular Activities

The students have also been involved in a variety of extra-curricular activities that extend well beyond the required curriculum.

This term, 13 students have participated in the Victorian Higher Ability Program (VHAP). In the Maths course, ‘Patterns: From Symbols to Secrets’, students have learned that mathematics is not just about finding the ‘right’ answer, but about exploring multiple solutions and strategies. In the English course, ‘The Power of the Pen’, students have delved into the purpose and impact of writing.

This semester, we had 18 students participate in the Emerging Sciences Victoria program (John Monash Science School), the largest group we've had since joining three years ago. These remote classrooms offer STEM-based courses aligned with the Year 9 - 10 curriculum. It has been a fantastic opportunity for students to expand their knowledge in subjects such as Medical Physics, Bioinformatics, Indigenous Science, the Nature and Beauty of Mathematics, Astrophysics, and Neuroscience. All students have thoroughly enjoyed engaging with these dynamic online courses.

Students participating in these special programs were presented with their achievement and participation certificates at a very special assembly recently.  This was an opportunity to celebrate their achievements with their proud family members and their peers.

As the year progressed, so did the maturity, cohesiveness and the social and academic development of every student in the cohort.  Every member of this year level became a leader of our student body regardless of whether they wore a badge or not.

I would like to sincerely thank our School Captains who met with me each week and ensured that I was in touch with what our students really needed and wanted.  Student Voice is an extremely valuable aspect of gaining feedback from our students.

Our school leaders visited Parliament House as representatives of our school and participated in a two-day Leadership Program at Beaumaris Secondary College with leaders from our network of schools.

Our students welcomed many visitors to our school including the IB Evaluation Team. They conducted the physical tour of our school and then met with this team to provide an overview of their thoughts, beliefs and actions in relation to the PYP from their perspective.

It is always with a tinge of sadness when our students leave our school.    As I read through the families who are moving on from BNPS, I recognised many of the parents who were ex BNPS students, signifying an extremely long association with our school.

Graduation

Practice at school

The Year 6 Graduation Evening at Sandringham Secondary College's Senior Campus was a truly memorable event. The students were outstanding, and their achievements shone brightly throughout the night.

A heartfelt thank you to the Graduation Committee, comprised of dedicated parent volunteers, for their hard work and careful planning of every aspect of this special occasion.
