Numeracy
In Years 5/6, we will be spending the remainder of the term investigating fractions, decimals, and percentages. Students have been exploring the strong connections between these concepts and how they can be applied to real-life situations, such as sales discounts and weather forecasting.
This term, our students have also worked extremely hard to strengthen their multiplication knowledge. Over the holidays, we encourage students to continue practising their multiplication facts, as this is a vital foundation for developing confidence and success in more complex mathematical understanding.
Reading
In Years 5/6, we have enjoyed analysing a wide range of texts during our comprehension sessions. Students have explored poems, persuasive letters, narratives, and newspaper articles. Together, we have unpacked new vocabulary, considered the author’s purpose, and investigated each text’s structure and features. It has been fantastic to see students beginning to think more critically about the texts they read.
In our phonics sessions, we have now completed our focus on long vowel sounds and have begun exploring morphology. Students have learnt about the schwa sound and have been applying plural rules to the words they write.
Writing
This term, our focus has been on Explanation Texts. Students have investigated the purpose and structure of different types of explanations, including sequential, cause and effect, and cyclical. We have written several explanation texts connected to our Inquiry topic Laws and Rules.
Currently, students are researching and composing an explanation text on What Happens When Laws Are Broken. They are working hard on this piece, as it will be published and proudly added to their writing portfolios.
Inquiry
This term, our Inquiry focus has been “Rules and Laws.” Students have explored how laws are created, how they can be amended, and the important role we all play in following and upholding them.
To finish the unit, students are working with a partner to create a presentation showcasing their learning. These will be shared in the final week of school as a celebration of their understanding and hard work throughout the term.
School Supplies
In Years 5/6, we have noticed that many students are missing some of the essential tools needed for their learning. Over the school holidays, we kindly ask families to help their child replenish their pencil case, so they are fully prepared for Term 4.
Items to organise include pencils, pens, rulers, glue sticks, sharpeners, and erasers.
