Literacy

During literacy sessions, students have been looking at texts about reducing, reusing and recycling consumable items developing vocabulary and making connections to writing by creating explanation texts about how compost can be made from food scraps. Students have been using graphic organisers and using learned vocabulary to add detail to their paragraphs about the process.

In phonics sessions, we have been reviewing the graphemes we have learned throughout the term and developed our knowledge of morphemes. Students have been learning about prefixes and suffixes and how they change the meaning of base words, by practising to decode and spell these words using syllabification.

Numeracy

During Numeracy, we have developed our understanding of fractions. Students have worked to identify parts of a whole and fractions of a collection and represented this though drawings and applying this to fractions of a collection. Students have had opportunities to understand and explain the vocabulary of fractions (the denominator is the number of parts the whole is divided into, and numerator the number of parts you have or are counting). Talk to your child about the fractions below and see if you can solve these together:

Inquiry - Sustainability

The students have been working to upcycle. Upcycling means to take old things that we might throw away, like empty boxes or old clothes, and turning them into something new, useful, or beautiful. Students have created a range of items that will be displayed on Monday 15th of September in our Gr 3-6 showcase afternoon.
