Dear Families,

We have continued to work hard across the last few weeks of the term. It has been exciting to see the way that our learning is coming together.

We wish all families a safe and happy holiday. Read every day, wear a helmet if you are riding your bike or scooter, and rest up ready for Term 4!

LITERACY

During phonics, students have been revising and reviewing vowel digraphs and the different ways they are represented in spelling. We have been exploring how different spelling choices create homophones. Homophones are words that sound the same but have different spelling and a different meaning. An example is blew and blue. Can you think of any others?

In reading, students have been exploring some fiction texts that use the persuasive genre of writing. One of our favourites has been "I Wanna Iguana" by Karen Kaufman Orloff. In the story the boy wants to convince his mother that he should be allowed to have a pet iguana. Students have been able to identify when the little boy has used facts, questions, emotions, and repetition as strategies to try and convince his mother.

In writing, students have linked the great persuasive strategies discussed in reading to their own writing. They can state an opinion on a given topic before following up with their arguments or reasons to convince their audience. The holidays might be a time they choose to put these strategies into action.

NUMERACY

In maths, we have continued to develop fluent recall of o'clock, half past, quarter past, and quarter to times. We have explored data collection strategies and how to read graphs. This knowledge has been extended to include pictographs where one picture does not equal one item but may represent two or five. We have explored concepts of multiplication and division through the use of arrays to systematically model our thinking.

SEL/INQUIRY

In SEL, students continue to engage with The Resilience Project through a lesson per week to focus on gratitude, mindfulness, and empathy. We have also looked at stress management techniques to help us calm our bodies when we start to move into the yellow and red zones with our emotions. Reminding ourselves "It is OK to feel how we feel" but we then need to have strategies we can use to manage and regulate those emotions successfully.

In inquiry, we have explored a variety of habitats and the animals that can be found in each of these. Students have been excited to discover the special features and adaptations that different animals have to allow them to live and survive in different locations.
