Illume – Bangarra Dance Theatre
On Wednesday, 10th of September, the year 7, 8 and 9 Dance Academy students went to the Playhouse Theatre to watch a performance about traditional dancing and storytelling. The performance was admirable and a day to remember, the lighting and the props they used really helped tell their story. All the dancers were Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performers, and they were very talented. I thought they were very emotional about their dancing. While the performance was on, it was like I could imagine the story in my head. Their dancing was based on before the British came to Australia, and their dancing told us about all the bush fires and about their ceremonies they used to do. My favourite dance that they did would have to be the one where they had giant ropes that lit up when the music got louder. Overall, the experience was one amazing day for all dancers here at the Berwick College Dance Academy – Maddy Bowden, Year 7 Dancer
VET & VCE Assessment Night
On Wednesday, the 3rd of September, our VET & VCE students participated in their final performance for the year to their family and friends in preparation for their performance exams for our Unit 3 and 4 students and for assessment for our Unit 1 and 2 students. This is always a time of reflection for both dance teachers and students, as for our Unit 3 & 4 students, this is their final time performing at school after 6 years of performances with their friends. It is also a time for teachers to witness the growth of our dancers and reflect on the many great experiences and memories the academy has provided.
We wish all our VET & VCE students all the best for the performance and written exams!
VET Mock Auditions
Our VET 3/4 students recently undertook a full mock examination that closely replicated the conditions of their upcoming external assessments. Following the exam, they received detailed feedback on their performance, which they will be working on and applying in the lead up to their real exam. This valuable experience that not only helped them practise time management and refine their exam techniques but also build confidence in working under authentic exam conditions.
Final reflection for our Year 12’s
Over the last six years, the Berwick College Dance Academy has been my favourite thing about high school. The assessment nights, the New York Study Tour, the national competitions and everything else that comes with being part of the Dance Academy gave my peers and I something to look forward to throughout the years. Not only was I given the opportunity to study something that I have always loved but I created friendships that lasted the entirety of high school. I had the pleasure of being the senior co-captain in 2024 which allowed me to meet dancers in younger year levels and share my experiences with the school council and future BCDA students. I developed close relationships with the dance teachers and my classmates over the years that made my whole high school experience even more special. I will forever be grateful for my time with the BCDA – Keerah Lloyd Nyunja, Year 12 VCE Dance Student
