Koorie Education

Casey North Koorie Day Out

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students attended Gleneagles Secondary College with Officer Secondary, Hampton Park, Pakenham High, Hallam High School, Kambrya Secondary College, as well as local primary schools. We started the day by making lemon myrtle yum balls.

We then learned a bit more about our culture, including about the different months and seasons for Bunurong People. We were able to feel animal furs like possum skin, learning about their uses such as for clothing. We also learned how they hunted.

We then went into their gym where we played some different types of Aboriginal sports. This was a lot of fun.  The last activity was an opportunity for us to talk to universities, TAFEs and other businesses about career opportunities for Koorie students.

Overall, it was a great day - Ben Hand (9J)

Bangarra Dance

Koorie students were invited to join the Dance Academy in seeing Bangarra Dance Theatre perform Illume. This all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander dance company, took students through mesmerising story, told through dance.

The dance ‘explores the awe of light, a bridge between the physical and spiritual worlds. It charts the impacts of light pollution in a climate emergency. ILLUME asks the urgent question: Is the deep wisdom passed down from elders enough to illuminate a path forward from the shadows of a dark future?’

It was a beautiful dance, which we all enjoyed.
